Press Release
In solidarity with Irom Sharmila’s novel method of struggle against the draconian law of AFSPA, Solidarity Youth Movement held programs in different parts of Kerala. Programs were held in front of the Secretariat at Trivandrum and the Fort Kochi Beach at Ernakulam.
The events at Ernakulam was inaugurated by the renowned journalist, Appukuttan Vallikunnu. He said that her ability to agitate the state by the sole use of peaceful methods to demonstrate passive resistance has made Irom Sharmila a legend of this age. Her sixteen year old struggle has been marked as an epic chapter in the history of Women’s Movements. Her struggle has also played a vital role in coercing the attention of the society towards the atrocities of the draconian laws that are discordant with democracy and the Indian constitution itself. It is not a negligible fact that Irom Sharmila, through her struggle was able to impart confidence to the Manipuris when they were threatened by the Indian government’s act of conferring special powers to the army.
Caricature, skits, nashik dhol, azadi slogans, poetry were the main draws at the programs. In Trivandrum, Solidarity workers wore masks of Irom Sharmila and distributed leaflets in their effort to express solidarity. Solidarity district president, C.A Noushad led the event.
