Mumbai, 24th November 2016: Today a protest rally was held from Piperoad Masjid to Kalina campus of Mumbai university as a mark of protest against the attack on JNU student Najeeb Ahmed and his disappearance. Najeeb was badly thrashed by ABVP goons in his hostel on 14thn October and since the next day he has been missing. It has been more than 40 days since he went missing even more than a month since JNU student Najeeb Ahmed’s disappearance, but the police claim that they have no clues about his whereabouts.

The protest march “Chalo Mumbai University!”, was organised by Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, Mumbai, Maharashtra – a joint front of various Ambedkarite, Muslim and leftist student organizations, Democratic and progressive social and political organisations and individuals. Students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai university and from student groups such as Chhatra Bharati, Vidyarthi Bharti and Samyak Vidyarthi Andolan, Students Islamic Organisation led the march. The march received tremendous support from the local organisations and groups based in Kurla. Union workers also extended support by being present for the march.

Hundreds of people participated in the rally. The participants expressed their anger by shouting slogans against the Goonda Raj of ABVP and the fascist brahmanical rule of the RSS and BJP government. It also shouted slogans of Dalit- Muslim unity and student unity.

The rally culminated with a sit in in the university. Students of various universities and student groups and Adv. Prakash Ambedkar, president of Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh, addressed the rally. The students spoke against the increasing control of brahmanical and fascist forces over university administration and campuses. They highlighted the intolerance with which the RSS backed BJP government deals with difference and the use of tags like traitors and anti nationals used against those who dare to dissent. Right to freedom of speech and expression and right to dissent have been curtailed to such an extent that students from Dalits, Muslims, Adivasis and other marginalized communities have to fight at the cost of their lives. Being a Dalit Rohith Vemula was institutionally murdered in similar manner by ABVP assailants and now being a Muslim Najeeb has to face similar harassment. All speakers reiterated a need for unity to fight the Manuwadi and fascist forces and ending the atmosphere of terror on campuses.

The protestors submitted a memorandum to vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh, demanding action against Najeeb’s assaulters and to ensure safety of students from the hooliganism of ABVP. He has been asked to forward the Memorandum to the MHRD as well.
