On August 29, the Vancouver-based Khalsa Credit Union (KCU) donated a cheque worth $ 30,000 to a foundation that was established to help Hindus and Sikhs being persecuted by the Islamic extremists in Afghanistan.

At a well attended community awards event of the KCU, Manmeet Singh Bhullar foundation received the money to immediately help the families of the minority communities that are being relocated to India and Canada.

Bhullar was an MLA in Alberta where he served as a minister in the Progressive Conservative government. He was killed in a road accident in November 2015 while he was trying to help a stranded motorist.

Bhullar had started the process of contacting the Hindus and Sikhs who were being harassed by the Islamic extremists in Afghanistan. He tried to get those impacted by Jazeeya or a religious tax imposed on non Muslims to India and Canada. In fact, his efforts helped in bringing many families to India and he was now trying to get some to Canada.

Because of his untimely death, his father Baljinder Singh Bhullar took upon him the responsibility to complete his unfinished task. He told Countercurrents that he had a choice either to keep sulking over his loss for the rest of his life or be strong enough to carry forward the mission of his son.

He therefore continues to work with the governments in India and Canada to settle down more than 50 families rescued from Afghanistan.

He received a tremendous applause following a video presentation he made on the occasion following which a cheque was presented to him on the dais.
