“Howard Zinn once wrote a book titled, You Can’t Stay Neutral on a Moving Train, and that’s especially true when you’re headed for a precipice. Right now, activists need to be bonded with the owner of the train or be the engineer.” — Richard Martin Oxman
The answer to the title of this article shouldn’t be attempted with a literal rhyme in mind. Rather, the thrust of the Countercurrents motto should be considered. And on that count, for me, “Direct!” seems aligned with the spirit of what the alternative media outlet is striving to reach with its readers.
“If humanity is to survive, the destructive system of capitalism and consumerism must be replaced by an economic system which is based on just equitable distribution and need based use of resources.”
The statement above precedes the CC sentence respecting its motto. And it gives me an opportunity to elaborate on why I’ve injected “Direct!” into whole kit and caboodle. I was going to blend in “Secure!”… as in securing significant reins of decision-making power, and that actually — directly — pinpoints my concern, which is that it won’t do sufficient good to educate, organize and agitate unless the entire dynamic leads to the engaged citizens securing an influential electoral (or other) position that enables them to show the way. Verbalize and — with those who have been educated, organized and agitated — demonstrate what must be done, driving the collective focus.
Or does the agitate aspect refer to the newly educated and organized stirring up the powers that be to do the right thing? Which they are highly unlikely to do, of course. Doesn’t matter, as the “direct” and “secure” injunctions I’m recommending hold water in either case. Meaning, those who intend to transform themselves and society are going to have to put themselves in some kind of driver’s seat.
Yup, that rhyme resonates.
