Sub: Immediate intervention to stop unfair & unjust eviction of the family of Preetha Shaji, Manthpadath (H), Edappalli,EKM-682033

Respected Sir,

I am writing you for the second time in three months bringing your attention to the sad plight of Preetha Shaji, a mother of two children, fighting to ward off the attachment of 18.5 cents of her family property, the only asset of the family, by the HDFC Bank. The first letter was written in March 4, 2018 when she was on a hunger strike and the State Government had intervened in the matter and promised to find an amicable solution to the issue. Now I am told the Bank and real estate agents are threatening the family with attachment proceedings and once again I am requesting your good office to intervene in the matter to prevent an unjust act against a family.

As I have mentioned in my previous letter the Bank has initiated the attachment proceedings based on a Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) order for a loan liability of Rs 2 lakh in which the family of Ms. Preetha has no direct role as Shaji, her husband had mortgaged the property only as a guarantee to the loan taken by another person. The current market value of the property is worth over Rs 2 crore and the DRT order has permitted to auction the said property to a paltry sum of Rs 37 lakhs. The incident is one more instance of the banking system in the country functioning totally against the interests of the ordinary people while rich and powerful are allowed to leave the country after fleecing billions from the banks.

The plight of Preetha Shaji and her family calls for a thorough probe and I take this opportunity to request you to intervene in the matter immediately for preventing the bank from moving ahead with the attachment proceedings and rescuing the family from the unjustified demands of the Bank. Expect your earnest and urgent intervention in the above issue at the earliest occasion.

Thanking you,

Medha Patkar.
