There are huge differences in Covid-19 deaths per million of population (Covid-19 deaths/ M) in the nations of the Anglosphere 5-Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, to whit 4/M (New Zealand), 4/M (Australia), 151/M (Canada), 272 (US) and 508 (UK). These huge differences in national Covid-19 deaths per million of population loosely correlate with political conservatism and neoliberal greed. Neoliberalism and deficient intra-national altruism are deadly.
The Five Eyes (FVEY) is an Anglosphere intelligence-sharing alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. These countries are parties to the multilateral UKUSA Agreement for joint cooperation in signals intelligence that arose out of World War 2 (WW2) [1]. These 5 Anglosphere nations are very similar culturally, economically and politically, and one would reasonably surmise that the most crucial intelligence to be shared would be that relating to mass mortality threats from non-state terrorism, weather or pandemic disease. However such 5 Eyes intelligence sharing has clearly failed in relation to how to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic as evidenced by these massive differences in “Covid-19 deaths per million in population” that are recorded and continuously updated by Worldometers [2].
As of 17 May 2020 the number of detected cases of Covid-19 total 4.7 million, and Covid-19 deaths total 313,000 [2]. From about 20 March 2020 the “total number of detected cases” and the “total number of deaths” have both been increasing in an approximately linear fashion as a function of time, although the daily increases are now very low in some “good” countries like New Zealand and Australia where the infection curve of “daily detected cases” versus “time” has flattened to a very low level [3, 4]. While Covid-19 deaths are presently gratifyingly low in Australia and New Zealand, they are distressingly high in Canada, the US and UK [2].
Clearly one expects more “Covid-19 deaths” in more populous countries, noting that the population in millions (M) is 4.8 M (New Zealand), 25.5 M (Australia), 37.7 M (Canada), 67.8 M (UK) and 330.8 M (US). However this is clearly an insufficient explanation for the differences. A crucial parameter is “Covid-19 deaths per million of population” (“Covid-19 deaths/M”) that is 4 (New Zealand), 4 (Australia), 151(Canada), 508 (UK) and 272 (US).
The shockingly high “Covid-19 deaths/M” for the rich and technological sophisticated countries of Canada, UK and the US (151-508) can be compared to similarly high values in the range 43-777 in similarly rich and technological sophisticated Western European countries, to whit 43 (Norway), 70 (Austria), 94 (Denmark), 70 (Austria), 96 (Germany), 166 (Luxembourg), 217 (Switzerland), 311 (Ireland), 331 (Netherlands), 364 (Sweden), 423 (France), 525 (Italy), 590 (Spain), and 777 (Belgium [1].
These high levels of “Covid-19 deaths/M” in rich and technologically sophisticated Western European countries is in stark contrast to very low levels (0.3 – 3 ) in similarly prosperous and technologically advanced countries in Australasia (Australia and New Zealand) and in East Asian countries, to whit 0.3 (Hong Kong), 0.3 (Taiwan), 3 (China), 4 (New Zealand), 4 (Australia), 4 (Singapore), 5 (South Korea) and 6 (Japan)[2].
Now various explanations can be offered to partly explain these huge differences in “Covid-19 deaths/million of population” e.g. island nature (Australia and New Zealand but contradicted by the examples of the UK and Ireland), Confucian ethic (dominant in East Asia but largely absent from Australia), and lack of stay-at-home lockdown (as in Sweden but contradicted by rich Western countries that did impose lockdown but had worse outcomes than Sweden).
The timeliness of tough action through stay-at-home lockdown and travel restrictions is clearly important. China imposed draconian stay-at-home lockdown from 23 January 2020, a few days after notifying the WHO and the World about human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus on 20 January 2020 (Day zero). However for most other countries it was not until about 2 months later – in about mid-March 2020 plus or minus a week or so – that they recommended or imposed stay-at-home lockdown [5-15].
However a plausible reason underlying this differentially experienced tragedy is the fundamental operational dichotomy of “livelihood” versus “lives” or “neoliberalism” versus “intra-national altruism”. This hypothesis is consistent with the radically different outcomes in “Covid-19 deaths/million of population” in the 5 countries of the Anglosphere “5 Eye” intelligence-sharing alliance. These different outcomes are set out below in decreasing order of neoliberal greed and increasing order of Covid-19 deaths/M [2].
(1). New Zealand – 4 Covid-19 deaths per million of population and Centre-Left government.
New Zealand (Aotearoa) (4 Covid-19 deaths/M) has a Left-Centrist Labor coalition government led by the much-admired, pro-Humanity Labour PM Jacinda Ardern. The New Zealand Parliament involves 5 political parties represented in the present 52nd Parliament by 120 MPs. These MPs represent 64 general electorate seats and seven Indigenous Maori electorates. The other 49 MPs are selected from the party lists [16]. New Zealand decency was exhibited by its expulsion from the Australia -New Zealand -United States (ANZUS) Treaty alliance for opposing nuclear weapons in New Zealand, the South Pacific and the World in general [17, 18]. On 20 March 2020 New Zealand banned entry of most non-residents and non-citizens and on 26 March emplaced stay-at-home lockdown with a huge economic impact [11].
(2). Australia – 4 Covid-19 deaths per million of population and a bare majority Right-Extreme Right Coalition government but with strong Labor and Green opposition.
Australia (4 Covid-19 deaths/M) has a Right to Extreme Right Coalition Government headed by PM Scott “Scomo” Morrison (aka Scum-o, Scam-o, Skim-o and Scheme-o), a fervent Pentecostal Christian Zionist with a limited and unsuccessful pre-politics background in tourism marketing spin. The US lackey, pro-war, pro-Apartheid Israel, pro-Apartheid, anti-science, effective climate change denialist and neoliberal Coalition has resolutely ignored expert scientific advice about man-made climate change. However in the Covid-19 crisis the Coalition Government adopted the no-brainer of listening to the medical scientists. The Coalition has a bare majority of seats in the Federal Parliament. But for a conservative billionaire spending an unprecedented (for Australia) $90 million on electoral propaganda [19] and massive propaganda from the largely US-owned and US-beholden Mainstream media, the Centre-Left Labor Party would have won in the 2019 elections with the help of “second preference” votes from the science-informed, pro-environment and pro-Humanity Greens in Australia’s compulsory and preferential voting system. During the Covid-19 pandemic the Coalition introduced an important ad hoc council involving the PM and the Premiers and Chief Ministers of the States and Territories (4 out of 8 being Labor). Australia has been involved in all post-1950 US Asian wars, atrocities in which 40 million Asians have died from violence or imposed deprivation . The Coalition supported all of these wars while Labor only opposed the Iraq War [20]. Australia has a key role in targeting illegal US drone strikes in 7 countries , hosts nuclear-armed US warships, and has a key role in US nuclear terrorism. On 20 March Australia closed its borders to all non-residents and non-Australians and announced social distancing rules to be implemented by the States and Territories. On 22 March Australia closed non-essential businesses in the first of increasingly severe lock-down measures [11]. However notwithstanding expert to the contrary, the Australian Government opposes school closure.
(3). Canada – 151 Covid-19 deaths per million of population, a Right-wing Liberal Government, and only small numbers of progressive MPs.
Canada (151 Covid-19 deaths/M) is ruled by an ostensibly progressive but actually pro-fossil fuels, pro-US, pro-Zionist, pro-Apartheid Israel, pro-Apartheid and Centre-Right Liberal minority government headed by PM Justin Trudeau. The Extreme Right Conservatives are out of power and the genuinely decent and humane National Democratic Party and Greens have only 24 and 3 seats, respectively in the 338-seat parliament as compared to 157 (Liberals), 121 (Conservatives), 32 (Bloc Quebecois, and 1 (Independent) [21]. US lackey Canada surprisingly kept out of the Iraq War but was involved in the Afghan War, atrocities that have been associated with deaths from violence and imposed deprivation totalling 4.6 million and 7.0 million, respectively [22-24]. Canada has a key role in US nuclear terrorism, and is a fervent supporter of nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel. Canadian provinces variously imposed stay-at-home lockdown in mid-March 2020. Thus the Government of Ontario declared a state of emergency and commenced closure of non-essential businesses on March 17, and Quebec commenced closing non-essential businesses and enforcing social distancing on 15 March.
(4). UK – 508 Covid-19 deaths per million of population and a Right-Extreme Right Conservative (Tory) government with a big majority over presently Right-Centre-Left Labor.
The UK (508 Covid-19 deaths/M) has a Right-Extreme Right Tory (Conservative) Government with a huge majority over the Labour Opposition. The UK is ruled by a Right-Extreme Right Conservative party led by PM Boris Johnson. The representation of the various parties in the 650-seat House of Commons is 365 (Conservative), 202 (Labour), 47 (Scottish National Party), 11 (Liberal Democrat), 8 (Democratic Unionist), 7 (Sin Fein), 4 (Plaid Cymru), 2 Social Democratic and Labor), 1 (Alliance), 1 (Green) and 1 (Independent) plus the Tory Speaker [25]. Labour was crippled by a virulent campaign by the yellow Mainstream media and traitorous racist Zionists blindly supporting nuclear terrorist, racist Zionist-run, genocidally racist, serial war criminal, democracy by genocide Apartheid Israel. The UK reportedly has 250 nuclear weapons [18] and as a serial war criminal state has been variously involved in the Iraq War, the Afghan War , the Yemen War , the Syrian Civil War and the destruction of Libya as well as selling arms worldwide. [20, 22-24]. The UK Government evidently was considering the option of inaction leading to hoped-for “herd immunity” [26, 27]. However after the 16 March publication of a key and dire analysis by Professor Neil Ferguson and 30 colleagues from Imperial College London ( predicting 510,00 deaths from inaction, 210,000 from mitigation and 40,000 from Suppression involving stay-at-home lockdown and school and university closures) [27, 28], the UK Government was persuaded to take vigorous Suppression measures on 23 March involving school and university closures, stay-at-home lockdown and mass closure of businesses [10, 15, 30].
(5). US – 272 Covid-19 deaths per million of population with only Right (Democrat) and Extreme Right (Republican) electoral options, and an ignorant, anti-science, populist president.
The US (272 Covid-19 deaths/M) has a Democrat-dominated House of Representatives, a Republican-dominated Senate and a stupid, ignorant and egregiously greedy (SIEG as in Dr Strangelove and “Sieg Heil!”), exceptionalist and populist president, Donald Trump. War is the penultimate in racism and genocidal wars are the ultimate in racism. The US has invaded 72 countries (52 since WW2) as compared to the British 193 countries, Australia 85, France 82, Germany 39, Japan 30, Russia 25, Canada 25, Apartheid Israel 12 and China 2 [20, 31-35]. The US has over 700 military bases in some 70 countries [37, 38] and subverts every country on earth [39]. The US presently imposes deadly sanctions on Cuba, Venezuela and Iran and is involved in illegal drone strikes (targeted by the joint Australia-US Pine Gap base in Central Australia) on 7 countries. The US has 4.3% of the wold population but consumes about 25% of the world’s annual production. It has been estimated that if everyone in the world were to have an American standard of living we would need 7 planets, and 3 planets if we all wanted a European standard of living [40]. The US has about 7,300 nuclear weapons as compared to Russia (8,000), Apartheid Israel (400), France (300), UK (250), China (250), Pakistan (120), India (100), and North Korea (about 10) [18]. Trump’s appalling conduct involves endless falsehoods, threatening to “obliterate” other countries, anti-science climate change denialism, and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Change Agreement, WHO funding and a key nuclear weapons control agreement. Trump America is the number 1 supporter of war criminality and ethnic cleansing by Apartheid Israel. Trump has continued the US War on Terror (in reality a War on Muslims) that has been associated with 32 million Muslim deaths from violence, 5 million, or from deprivation, 27 million, in 20 countries invaded by the US Alliance since the US Government’s 9-11 false flag atrocity [41, 42]. Trump has appallingly obfuscated and mislead US attempts to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic [43-47]. Nevertheless the US states have variously imposed stay-at-home lockdown measures, starting with California on 19 March [14]. However idiot Trump is contradicting his own advisers and insisting that the lockdown cease as the epidemic is raging across the US. Trump is putting neoliberal private profit ahead of American lives.
(6). Neoliberal greed put private profit before lives in Canada, the UK and the US with Covid-19 deaths totalling 130,000 to date versus only 21 and 98 in New Zealand and Australia respectively.
From the first retrospectively confirmed case of Covid-19 (1 December 2019) to notification of the WHO of a pneumonia-like disease deriving the Wuhan fish and live market on 31 December 2019 was a mere 4 weeks. This was followed rapidly in early January 2020 by final determination of the first RNA sequence for the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) (genome Wuhan-Hu-1). On 20 January 2020 (Day Zero) China notified the Chinese public and the world via the WHO of human-to-human transmission of the virus. Chinese provision of primers and probes the next day was crucial for global virus detection. On 23 January China commenced lockdown in Wuhan, Hubei Province and thence all of China.
However in contrast to the rapid action by China, it took most countries about 2 months after Day Zero (i.e. by about mid-March 2020) before they introduced stay-at-home lockdown measures, an extraordinary tardiness that reflected money (and especially One Percenter Big Money) winning in the “livelihood” versus “lives” competition during the Covid-19 pandemic. That deadly tardiness and exponential increase in infections outside China, and most disastrously in the US, has meant that World and US deaths now (17 May 2020) total 313, 459 and 90,113, respectively, as compared to 4,633 in China, and the global number of revealed cases and the number of deaths are still remorselessly increasing in a quasi-linear fashion as a function of time [2].
The disingenuous, dishonest and aggressive calls by the anti-science Trump Administration and the anti-science Australian Coalition Government for an “international inquiry “ into the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic falsely implies that there is a present absence of crucial information. However this is belied by the reality of immense scientific work (much of it in China or initiated in China ) such the sequencing of the genomes of thousands of coronavirus variants [6, 7]. Further, the US heads the Anglosphere 5 Eyes Intelligence-sharing Club (the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) that shares vital intelligence for the safety and security of these nations and the “Free World”. But there is surely nothing less “vital” than intelligence on how to have prevented 130,000 Anglosphere 5 Eyes lives to date from Covid-19, and perhaps as many as 260,000 Anglosphere lives by the time the Covid-19 pandemic is over. The Covid-19 mortality statistics for the 5-Eyes Club are utterly damning of the neoliberal, One Percenter-dominated US, UK and Canadian administrations who have demonstrably put “money” before “lives”.
In contrast, Australia (population 25.5 million or 25.5M) , like New Zealand (Aotearoa; population 4.8 M), has been remarkably successful in suppressing the Covid-19 outbreak. As of 17 May 2020, there were 7,004 detected cases and 98 deaths (Australia), 1,499 detected cases and 21deaths (New Zealand), 75,864 detected cases and 5,679 deaths (Canada, population 37.7 million i.e. 37.7 M), 240,161 detected cases and 34,466 deaths (the UK, population 67.8M), 1,507,713 detected cases and 90, 113 deaths (the US, population 330.8 M), and 4,734, 378 detected cases and 313,419 deaths (the World, population 7,600 M) [2].
To reiterate, for comparative purposes these disparities are usefully expressed as Covid-19 deaths per million (M) of population: 4/M (New Zealand), 4/M (Australia), 151/M (Canada), 272/M (US) and 508/M (UK). The Covid-19 deaths per million of population ratio (deaths/M) provides a good relative measure of intra-national altruism. Thus New Zealand (4/M) has a marvellously pro-Humanity Labor PM, Jacinda Ardern, who heads a Center-Left coalition government; Australia (4/M) is governed by a Right-wing Coalition but is only a few parliamentary seats away from having a decent Labor Government (with many of the pandemic decisions being made collectively by an unprecedented ad hoc national body composed of the PM plus 8 State and Territory Premiers or Chief Ministers, 4/8 being Labor); Canada (151/M) is ruled by an ostensibly progressive but actually pro-fossil fuels, pro-US, pro-Apartheid Israel, pro-Apartheid and Centre-Right Trudeau Liberal minority government (the Extreme Right Conservatives are out of power and the genuinely decent and humane National Democratic Party and Greens have only 24 and 3 seats, respectively in the 333-seat parliament); the US is endlessly ruled by a tag team of the Right-wing Democrats and the Extreme Right-wing Republicans who are presently in power under populist neo-fascist Trump; and the UK (508/M) is ruled by the pro-war, pro-US, pro-Apartheid Israel, pro-Apartheid and Extreme Right-wing Conservatives (298 out of 650 seats) with Center-Left Labor having only 243 seats after a virulent campaign of vilification by the traitorous and genocidally racist Zionists and a similarly foul Right-wing gutter press.
So much for the Anglosphere 5-Eyes Intelligence-sharing Club (the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) that shares vital intelligence (with the pro-Apartheid US thence sharing this intelligence with Apartheid Israel). There is surely nothing less “vital” than intelligence on how to have saved 130,000 Anglosphere lives to date, and perhaps as many as 260,000 Anglosphere lives by the time the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
Indeed if one conservatively assumes that 4 Covid-19 deaths per million of population (the figure for New Zealand and Australia) is the best that Canada, the US and the UK could have achieved as sophisticated Anglosphere countries, and that brilliant 5-Eyes intelligence would have informed them about exactly what to do, then one can estimate how many lives Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson could have saved if they had adopted that course of action. On this basis, Justin Trudeau would have saved 37.7 million x [(151 – 4) per million] = 5,542 lives; Donald Trump would have saved 330.8 million x [(272 – 4) per million] = 88,654 lives; and Boris Johnson would have saved 67.8 million x [508-4) per million] = 33, 697 lives; for a total of 127, 893 lives saved.
However if we assume that the best they could have achieved was the 0.3 Covid-19 deaths per million of population (the figure for Hong Kong and Taiwan) then New Zealand would have saved 4.8 million x [(4 – 0.3) per million] = 18 lives; Australia would have saved 25.5 million x [(4 – 0.3) per million] = 94 lives; Canada would have saved 37.7 million x [(148 – 0.3) per million] = 5,606 lives; the US would have saved 330.8 million x [(268 – 0.3) per million] = 88,557 lives; and the UK would have saved 67.8 million x [501-0.3) per million] = 34,171 lives, for a total of 128,875 lives.
New Zealand’s objection to nuclear weapons effectively removed it from the Australia-New Zealand-US (ANZUS) military pact, and in 1985 the US banned New Zealand from any US intelligence. US lackey Australia under the fervent US loyalist Bob Hawke likewise cut New Zealand off from any US-linked intelligence [17]. There is presently evidence that the US and 3 of its 5 Eyes allies distrust New Zealand as a member of the 5 Eyes intelligence-sharing hub [48, 49]. Accordingly we can excuse a likely intelligence-denied New Zealand its 21 avoidable Covid-19 deaths, leaving the rest of the Anglosphere 5-Eyes Club being responsible for 128,875 Covid-19 deaths, including those in New Zealand.
The state terrorist Anglosphere 4-Eyes Club (the 5-Eyes Club minus New Zealand) has an appalling record of major involvement in US-led genocidal violence against Muslim countries over the last 3 decades for oil, geopolitical hegemony and for support of nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel. Indeed it can be estimated that 32 million Muslims have died violently, 5 million, or avoidably from imposed deprivation, 27 million, in 20 countries variously invaded by the US Alliance since the 9-11 catastrophe that numerous science, architecture, engineering, aviation, military and intelligence experts conclude was a US Government 9-11 false flag atrocity with likely Apartheid Israeli and Saudi Arabian involvement [41, 42]. The Iraq War (4.6 million deaths from violence or deprivation) and the Afghan War (7 million deaths from violence or deprivation) [22-24] are alone estimated to have cost the US $6 trillion in terms of budgeted and long-term accrual cost.
However annual preventable deaths from “lifestyle choices” (e.g. smoking) or “political choices” (e.g. not banning smoking) in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US total , 85,000, 101,000, 150,000 and 1.7 million, respectively [50-55]. Accordingly such preventable deaths of this kind in the US in the 18.5 years since 9-11 total 1.7 million per year x 18.5 years = 31.5 million. Thus the US has committed $6 trillion to killing millions of Muslims abroad (for oil, hegemony and Apartheid Israel) instead of trying to save millions of American lives at home.
The coronavirus can infect and in some cases kill not just the poor but also billionaires – and that is why it is estimated by the IMF that the economic cost of the lockdown to prevent perhaps 500,000 Covid-19 deaths could be $9,000 billion [56], whereas the world only spends about $4 billion each year trying to prevent 500,000 annual deaths from malaria in the Third World. The enormous altruism elicited intra-nationally by the Covid-19 pandemic does not extend to the “unpeople” of the global South [57-59].
Similarly, the analysis presented here strongly suggests that the horrendous number of Covid-19 deaths in Canada, the UK and the US that presently total about 130,000 (as compared to only 21 and 98 in New Zealand and Australia respectively) came about because the fervently neoliberal governments of these countries deliberately put money and private profit before the lives of ordinary citizens. Those responsible for this immense crime against their fellow citizens should be prosecuted before the International Criminal Court. Neoliberalism kills.
