Israeli Protests: Racist Western Mainstream Media Ignore The Palestinians

israel protest 2023

The Western Mainstream media (MSM) are extensively covering the massive Israeli protests against threats to judicial independence by the new extreme right wing Netanyahu government. However the pro-Zionist, pro-Apartheid Israel and hence pro-Apartheid  Western MSM maintain the obscene myth of asserted Israeli democracy and overwhelmingly ignore the gross abuse of the human rights of 16 million Exiled, Occupied and Israeli Indigenous  Palestinians.

We all know from example after example that the pro-Zionist Western governments routinely lie and that Zionist-beholden Western MSM are deeply complicit in this appalling culture of lying by commission and lying by omission. For a classic analysis of this entrenched mendacity in the US see “Manufacturing Consent” by Professors Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky that details the role of US MSM as agents of US Government propaganda [1]. Following the US example, Western governments are obsessively secretive, but this must be seen as massive government lying by omission that is tolerated by mendacious Western MSM. Of course  lying by omission is far, far worse than lying by commission because the latter at least permits  public refutation and public discussion (albeit subject to massive censorship by MSM gatekeepers) [2-5]. For a radical compilation of about 80 essays attacking this huge monolith of Western lying see “The Most Dangerous Book Ever Published: Deadly Deception Exposed” edited by Soren Korsgaard [6] (although you may disagree with some of the views expressed) [7].

My concerns about massive Western MSM lying by omission over the huge Israeli protests are summarized in the following letter I sent (in various iterations) to the editors of major Australian MSM (it is, of course, very unlikely to be published): “Dear Editor, There is massive media coverage of hundreds of thousands of Jewish Israelis demonstrating for judicial independence and asserted “democracy”. However, resolutely ignored by the taxpayer-funded ABC [Australia’s equivalent of the UK BBC] and SBS [Australia’s multicultural media organization] are that (a)  the demonstrations are occurring in towns and villages ethnically cleansed of circa 800,000 Indigenous Palestinians 75 years ago in the genocidal 1948 Nakba (Catastrophe), and (b)  of the circa 16 million mainly impoverished Indigenous  Palestinians today, 8 million are Exiled Palestinians excluded from their own country, 5.5 million are Occupied Palestinians under violent foreign Occupation (cf Ukraine) and deprived of all human rights specified by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and  2 million are Israeli Palestinians  who can vote for the government ruling them albeit as Third Class citizens under 60 Nazi-style race-based discriminatory laws. As  an anti-racist Jewish Australian Humanist and taxpayer I utterly condemn (a) the appalling crimes of democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel, and (b) the egregiously racist lying by omission by the ABC and SBS that demands their radical de-funding.”

My concerns are shared by non-European and left-wing media which are truthfully and ethically reporting the Israeli protests over judicial independence and the threat to asserted “democracy” in Apartheid Israel, while also noting the appalling, long-term and continuing  denial of human rights and justice to 16 million mostly impoverished and sorely oppressed Exiled, Occupied and Israeli Indigenous Palestinians. However  Western MSM overwhelmingly ignore these horrendous Palestinian realities in their coverage of the Israeli protests. While decent folk believe in Kindness and Truth, in this matter the Zionist-subverted Western MSM reveal their massive commitment to anti-Arab anti-Semitic Racism and Lying in support of Apartheid Israel, Apartheid America and hence of the vile crime of Apartheid.

Set out below is a quick sketch of this shockingly differential media coverage of the Israeli protests.

(A). Decent non-European and left-wing media and writers note the gross violation of the Indigenous Palestinians by Apartheid Israel.

A1.  Patrick Martin in the World Socialist Website (WSWS): “The self-proclaimed leaders of the protest movement, mostly officials of the previous government that gave way to Netanyahu after elections last year, like Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid, are themselves committed defenders of the Zionist state and its oppression of the Palestinian people, as is the judicial system which they defend. They do not represent a “progressive” alternative, objecting to Netanyahu’s measures only because they fear that he will destroy the democratic fig leaf of the state of Israel… Despite its enormous scale, however, this mass movement has a weakness that will prove fatal if not combatted: It has not so far embraced in any way the struggles of the Palestinian people. There has been a sea of Israeli flags, with not one attempt to mobilize support from Israeli Arabs, let alone the Palestinian population of the occupied territories” [8].

A2.  Thomas Scripps in WSWS: “Demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands, of a population of just over nine million, have been held for the last 12 weeks against the far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to stage a coup against the judiciary. His plans, pursued alongside his fascistic coalition partners, are part of a broader project to dramatically escalate the Israeli state’s persecution of the Palestinians, the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and to clamp down on growing social and political opposition in the Israeli working class… But whatever the intentions of Lapid, Gantz and the rest, the split in Zionist forces is an expression of a deeper crisis of the Israeli state and world capitalism which has blown apart the myth of a common Jewish people unaffected by the deep class divides and social tensions which scar the country. As the World Socialist Web Site wrote Monday, it has “brought Jewish workers and youth face to face with the historical necessity of a political reckoning with Zionism.””

A3.  Qatar-based Al Jazeera reports Ofer Cassif (Israeli politician and Knesset member for the leftist Hadash party) stating: “What the government wants to do is not to correct or to fix or amend the judicial system, so that it will be more just. Exactly the opposite. They want to take control over the judicial system.  I think that we should refer to the situation not as a judicial overhaul, but as a regime coup. Netanyahu wants to turn Israel from an ethnocracy – because Israel in my view has never been a democracy, because this state is based on a Jewish supremacy, so it cannot be regarded as a democracy from the first place – but it’s going to be under the coup that the government wants to pursue, Israel is going to turn into a full fledged fascist dictatorship” [10].

A4.  Rachel Beit Arie (Director of Zochrot, an Israeli  NGO researching and exposing the  Palestinian Nakba)  writing in Mondoweiss: “To those of us who have been protesting the Israeli regime and its oppression of the Palestinian people for years, this wave of dissent is both perplexing and frustrating. The protestors are calling to “shield our democracy”; they are ferocious in their defense of the high court of justice and of the balance of power.  We know that the same court for decades has approved killing, torture, house demolitions, land confiscations, and deportations of Palestinians. It’s the court that, from the very establishment of the state of Israel, and with very few exceptions, willingly positioned itself as one of the arms of an un-democratic, oppressive regime and provided It with a decent facade. Only last year, the supreme court green-lighted the transfer of thousands of Palestinians from Masafer Yatta, whose lands the army declared a “firing zone,” and this is but one example of dispossession allowed by the court” [11].

A5.  Mairav Zonszein in the Daily Beast: “Israelis are trying to save a democracy that never existed… Protesters against the far right’s attempt to crush judicial checks and balances need to understand that Israel’s turn to illiberalism wasn’t born with this government… The act of creating new laws in order to serve its interests on the ground is precisely what Israel has been doing for 56 years as an occupying power. Since it conquered the West Bank, Golan Heights, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip in 1967, the government, through its military and legal experts, created an entirely novel and distinct legal framework to implement long-term military rule over an occupied population that is in line with the “rule of law” as it always defined it, with the Supreme Court’s imprimatur, and thus the norm” [12].

A6.  Jessica Corbett in Common Dreams and Green Left: “While silent on Apartheid, Israelis protest Netanyahu firing minister who urged halt to judicial coup … Decades into the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine, massive crowds flooded Israel’s streets on Sunday for another round of demonstrations to “save a democracy that never existed,” as one journalist recently put it… earlier in the weekend, Israeli soldiers forced Palestinian worshippers out of the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.” [13, 14].

A7.  Dr Ramzy Baroud  (Palestine Chronicle editor) quoted in  Common Dreams: “a proper engagement with the ongoing protests is to further expose how Tel Aviv utilizes the judicial system to maintain the illusion that Israel is a country of law and order, and that all the actions and violence in Palestine, however bloody and destructive, are fully justifiable according to the country’s legal framework… Yes, Israel should be sanctioned, not because of Netanyahu’s attempt at co-opting the judiciary, but because the system of apartheid and regime of military occupation constitute complete disregard and utter violation of international law… Whether Israelis like it or not, international law is the only law that matters to an occupied and oppressed nation” [13, 14].

A8.  Yonah Lieberman ( co-founder of the US group IfNotNow) quoted in Common Dreams: “Furious young people fighting an authoritarian for their rights. Reminds you of popular uprisings that have happened over and over again across the world. But if these were young Palestinians they would have been shot—the Jewish privilege inherent in Israel’s apartheid system. A popular uprising to overthrow Netanyahu and his extremist government will not lead to democracy and equality for all in Israel. Only  overthrowing the entire apartheid system will lead to democracy and equality for all” [13, 14].

A9.  Raja Abdulrahim in “Palestinian citizens of Israel see the protests as ignoring their cause” (New York Times)  quotes Sawsan Zaher  (a lawyer who defends Palestinian rights in Apartheid Israeli courts):  “For us, the legal war has already been decided with the nation state law. These protests are Israeli Jewish protests for their own image as a democratic state. For Palestinians, it never was a democracy because of the history of institutionalized racism”” [15].

(B). Western Mainstream media overwhelmingly ignore continuing gross Zionist violation of Palestinian human rights.

B1.  Apart from an article in the New York Times by its Palestine correspondent, Raja Abdulrahim (see A9 above ), this leading US newspaper ignored the horrendous 56 years of illegal and lawless Israeli military occupation of the West Bank, Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Gaza [15].

B2.  NBC refers to “The fragility of Israeli democracy” but ignores Occupied Indigenous Palestinian exclusion from voting by democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel [16].

B3. The Washington Post similarly ignores the non-franchised and human rights-deprived Occupied Palestinians but one of its journalists comments: “Ending judicial oversight of legislation would be a major win for Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, whose members have vowed to prioritize Israel’s Jewish character over its democratic one and to annex the occupied West Bank — land that Palestinians envision as part of their future state” [17].

B4.  In contrast, the relatively progressive US PBS News Hour actually mentions in passing the Israeli Palestinians and the horribly violated Occupied Palestinians in reporting: “Israel’s Palestinian citizens, however, have largely sat out the protests. Many say Israel’s democracy is tarnished by its military rule over their brethren in the West Bank and the discrimination they themselves face” [18]. However the horrible reality is that “Israel’s democracy” doesn’t exist to be “tarnished”. Israel is a racist, Apartheid  ethnocracy.

B5.  Akbar Shahid Ahmed in the Huffington Post makes passing  reference  to Palestinian human rights: “And many Israelis worry that the changes would allow dramatic upheaval in how their society operates, for instance by letting ultra-Orthodox politicians institute hardline religious policies like limits on work on the Sabbath or by further diminishing the rights of Palestinians living in Israel or the West Bank”. However he also quotes a March 8 letter  from   92 House Democrats to President Joe Biden stating “We urge you to use all diplomatic tools available to prevent Israel’s current government from further damaging the nation’s democratic institutions and undermining the potential for two states for two peoples. The proposals … would jeopardize Israeli democracy, which in turn would undermine the very foundation of the U.S.-Israel relationship. Stripping the judiciary of its check on the governing coalition would empower far-right lawmakers seeking to entrench settlement of the West Bank and advance a pro-annexation agenda, undermining the prospects for a two-state solution and threatening Israel’s existence as a Jewish and democratic state” [19]. However 53% of the Subjects of Apartheid Israel are non-Jewish (only 47% are Jewish)  and 50% are Indigenous Palestinians – it is certainly not a “Jewish state”. Apartheid Israel is certainly  not a democracy – it is a race-based ethnocracy and an Apartheid rogue state.

B6.  The relatively civilized UK Guardian  at least acknowledged the Palestinian Elephant in the Room in passing by merely noting that: “The issue of the occupation of the Palestinian territories has not played a large part in the protests despite it being the most pressing international issue” [20].

B7.  Likewise the UK BBC is utterly silent about the exclusion of Occupied Palestinians and Exiled Palestinians from the Israeli fake democracy, ethnocracy and theocracy [21]. In a “comprehensive” BBC summary of numerous reports by its “journalists” there is no reference at all to Palestinians [22].

B8.  The Australia’s taxpayer-funded Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) News (that is directed to multicultural  Australia that is now only 76% “White”): “Israelis are protesting a proposed judicial reform legislation by the country’s hard-right government that is being viewed as a threat to the nation’s democracy” [23]. The SBS makes false claims of Israeli “democracy” while ignoring the reality of the Indigenous  Palestinians who represent 50% of Apartheid Israel’s Subjects despite a century-long Palestinians Genocide (2.2 million deaths from violence, 0.1 million, and imposed deprivation, 2.1 million) involving  2 major mass Indigenous Palestinians population expulsions (800,000 in the 1948 Nakba or Catastrophe, and a further 400,000 Arabs expelled in the 1967 Naksa or Setback) [24-28].

B9.  The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) (Australia’s taxpayer-funded equivalent of the UK BBC) similarly talks of the threat to “Israel’s democracy” with no mention of Apartheid Israel’s  50% Indigenous Palestinian subjects, of whom 73% are excluded  from human rights under violent military occupation and from voting for the government ruling them (i.e. are subject to egregious Apartheid) [29].

B10.  The US Murdoch media empire’s Australian flagship newspaper, “The Australian”, made a shocking contribution to the global discussion of the Israeli “crisis” with an Editorial entitled “Netanyahu needs a compromise” [30] that (a) falsely and repeatedly refers to Israel as a “Jewish state” (but 50% of its subjects are Indigenous Palestinians notwithstanding a century-long Palestinian Genocide  involving over 2 million Palestinian deaths from violence and deprivation and 2 mass Palestinian population expulsions) [24-28]; (b) falsely refers to “Israel’s estimable democracy” that is “alive and well” (Israel is a Nazi-style Apartheid state in which 73% of its Indigenous Subjects are excluded from voting for the government  ruling them; this Nazi-style ethnocracy is alive and nuclear-armed but is certainly not well in a moral sense); and (c) ignores the excluded Palestinians except for a last vicious sentence that falsely asserts “Only the terrorists of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hamas and Islamic Jihad will be winners if efforts to seek compromise fail and the turmoil continues” (terrorism is as terrorism does –  4,000 Zionists have been killed in Palestine since 1920 and only 40 were killed by rockets from the Gaza Concentration Camp in the last 2 decades, as compared to 2.2 million Palestinian deaths from violence and imposed deprivation from WW1 onwards [24-28]; nuclear terrorist Apartheid Israel has 100 nuclear weapons and Germany-supplied submarine delivery systems but Iran has none and wants a nuclear weapons-free Middle East and World [31]; since 1950 about 24 million people have died avoidably from deprivation in countries variously occupied by Apartheid Israel [32]; and pro-Palestinian human rights people, organizations and countries  want a free and democratic Palestine [33, 34] whereas the genocidally racist Zionists from Theodor Herzl (late 19the century founder of Zionism) to Benjamin Netanyahu (the PM heading the present fascist Israeli government) have consistently and vilely  demanded ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Indigenous inhabitants of Palestine [35].

B11.  As reported by The Guardian (Australia), the Australian Labor Government’s foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, in welcoming Netanyahu’s decision to pause the legislation: “[Australia has] a longstanding friendship with Israel based on shared values and a commitment to democracy and the rule of law. A robust system of checks and balances is a fundamental characteristic of any modern democracy. We encourage parties to find common ground consistent with democratic principles” [36]. However Wong’s assertion is false: Apartheid  Israel is not a democracy – it is a grossly human rights-abusing and genocidally racist neo-Nazi ethnocracy. Not a word from Wong about the sorely oppressed and democracy-denied Occupied Palestinians living for 56 years under the heel of a violent and genocidally racist military occupation. One notes that the horribly violated Ukrainians are now entering their second year of part occupation by the war criminal Russian invaders. However, while the Australian Labor Government rightly supports the horribly violated Ukrainians, it has utterly and comprehensively betrayed the sorely oppressed Palestinians in 85 ways [37].

B12.  “The Sydney Morning Herald” and its sister newspaper “The Age” (Melbourne) have reported the “Israeli crisis” thus: “Opponents of the plan to tighten parliament’s control over judicial processes call it a threat to democracy and have organised huge protests against it.”[38].  But what democracy? 50% of Israeli Subjects are Indigenous Palestinians but 73% are excluded from voting for the government highly abusively ruling them for 56 years. Israel does not have democracy – it is a nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, grossly human  rights-abusing, and neo-Nazi ethnocracy.

B13.  The American  ABC news organization reported the Israeli crisis without mention of the Palestinians (50% of Israeli subjects) but quoted without correction the mendacious and war criminal Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that  “Israel was, and will remain, a strong and vibrant democracy” and that “[Israel] is] a democracy and will remain a democracy, with majority rule and proper safeguards of civil liberties” [39]. The reality is comprehensively otherwise: Israel is not a democracy  (it is a neo-Nazi ethnocracy), it does not have Jewish Majority rule (53% of Apartheid Israel’s subjects are non-Jewish and 50% are Indigenous Palestinians), and Israeli Apartheid involves gross violation of human rights and civil liberties (8 million Exiled Palestinians are excluded from their own country, 5.5 million Occupied Palestinians are excluded from all the human rights set out in the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [40], and 2 million Israeli Palestinians are subject to  60 Nazi-style, race-based discriminatory  laws [41, 42]).

Final comments.

Anti-racist Jewish American journalist I.F. Stone famously opined: “Governments lie” [2-4]. In the US Mainstream media serve the interests of the political Establishment [1]. Since Israeli acquisition of nuclear weapons in the mid-1960s, the US has become progressively Zionist-dominated to the extent that 30% of Biden’s Cabinet are Jewish Zionists and the remainder are Christian Zionists [43]. Indeed while numerous anti-racist  Jewish intellectuals are resolutely  critical  of the  ongoing Palestinian Genocide, Western Mainstream Media variously  censor  or white-wash  the nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, and grossly human rights-abusing conduct of Apartheid Israel.  A part  explanation for this huge moral discrepancy is that the American 60% of the world’s 30 biggest media companies have a disproportionately high  Jewish Board membership. Jews and females represent 2% and 51%, respectively,  of the US population but average 33% and 19%, respectively, of Board members of the top 18 US media companies [44]. In the US-dominated West Mainstream media are US-beholden and Zionist-subverted, noting that Zionism is genocidal racism and Nazism without gas chambers but with 100 nuclear weapons.  These horrible realities underlie the false and racist malreportage of the Israeli protests by mendacious Western Mainstream media.

Zionist-subverted, mendacious and Orwellian Western Mainstream media  variously falsely report the huge Israeli protests as protecting the “democracy”, ”civil rights”, “human rights”  and “judicial independence” of a  “Jewish state”  whereas the horrible realities are that (a) Apartheid Israel is a neo-Nazi ethnocracy that excludes 73% of its  Indigenous Palestinian  subjects from voting for the government ruling them; (b)  Israeli Apartheid involves gross violation of the human rights and civil liberties of Indigenous Palestinians (8 million Exiled Palestinians are excluded from their own country, 5.5 million Occupied Palestinians are excluded from all the human rights set out in the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and 2 million Israeli Palestinians are subject to  60 Nazi-style, race-based discriminatory  laws); (c)  the neo-Nazi Apartheid Israeli judiciary have been complicit in these gross violations of human rights, civil rights, and International Law over the last 75 years; and (d) the “Jewish State” is a dual fiction: (1) despite a century-long Palestinians Genocide (over 2 million deaths from violence  and  imposed deprivation and 2 mass population expulsion events in the 1948 Nakba and 1967 Naksa) today  53% of Israeli Subjects are non-Jewish, 50% are Indigenous  Palestinians and merely 47% are Jewish, and (2) of  Apartheid Israeli Subjects today the ethnic descendants of the Jewish and non-Jewish Palestinians at the time of Jesus are the Indigenous Palestinians, with the Jewish Israelis largely deriving from Yemeni,, Berber and Khazar converts to Judaism (unlike the Semitic Indigenous Palestinians the politically dominant Khazar-derived Ashkenazi Jews are non-Semitic). Indeed anti-racist Jewish American scholar Professor Bertell Ollman (New York University)  has stated: “The Zionists are the worst anti-Semites in the world today, oppressing a Semitic people as no nation has done since the Nazis” [45].

While non-European and left-wing media recognize the humanity of Palestinians, this is effectively denied by racist Western governments and by Zionist-subverted Mainstream journalist, editor, politician, academic and commentariat  presstitutes. As the West righty condemns the Ukraine War atrocity, in vain decent folk protest: “What about the Palestinians?”. This Western ignoring of the horrendous, century-long violation of the Palestinians (50% children and 75% women and children) recalls  Hughes Mearns’ poem “Antigonish”: “As I was going up the stair, /  I met a man who wasn’t there! / He wasn’t there again today! / I wish, I wish he’d go away” [46].

Indeed  a member of the new fascist Israeli Government,  Bezalel Smotrich (Israeli finance minister) has falsely and offensively opined: “The Palestinian people are an invention from the last century. There is no such thing as Palestinians because there’s no such thing as the Palestinian people” [35]. However history says otherwise – the Palestinians and their forebears have continuously inhabited Palestine back to the Agrarian Revolution in the Fertile Crescent. Indeed Greek historian Herodotus (circa 484-425 BCE) refers to Palestine (land of the Philistines) as does the Holy Bible in relation to the non-Biblically uncorroborated story of the exodus from Egypt in circa 1000 BCE (Exodus Chapter 15, verse 14 ). The Palestinians are not going away.

What can decent people do? Decent anti-racist folk committed to Kindness and Truth must (a) inform everyone  they can, (b) eschew mendacious Zionist-subverted Mainstream media, and (c) urge and apply Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against  Apartheid Israel and all  people, politicians , parties, collectives, corporations and countries supporting Apartheid Israel and hence the utterly vile crime of Apartheid.
