2023 Paradox: 75th Anniversary Of 1948 UDHR Launch & Start Of South African & Israeli Apartheid

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the launch of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. Unfortunately in 1948 inhumanity prevailed with the launch of Apartheid in South Africa by the newly-elected neo-Nazi Afrikaaner National Party, and of genocidal Apartheid Israel in Palestine by the neo-Nazi Zionist settler-colonialists who murderously  depopulated Palestine of over half of its Indigenous Palestinians in the 1948  Nakba (Catastrophe).

1945 saw the end of the WW2 atrocity in which about 90 million people had died from violence and war-imposed deprivation [1]. The world wanted peace, human rights and self-determination, and the UDHR was a carefully considered  expression of those desires and ideals [2]. Unfortunately the defeat of the genocidally racist fascist dictatorships by the Western democracies resulted in rule over much of the world by a new global American Empire that quickly  illustrated the truism that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The revealing book “1946” by Victor Sebestyen describes the crucial post-war  Big Power decisions made in that year that heavily determined the subsequent decades of the modern world [3].  With the  benefit of hindsight  the 2 key decisions were for the nuclear weapons stand-off  and unrestrained economic growth. Today Humanity and the Biosphere are  existentially  threatened by nuclear weapons and by climate change from unrestrained economic growth in a global economy that is still overwhelmingly carbon-based [4]. One of Humanity’s greatest minds, Stephen Hawking, has succinctly described these 2 key existential threats thus: “We see great peril if governments and societies do not take action now to render nuclear weapons obsolete and to prevent further climate change” [5].

Before considering UDHR-violating  South African Apartheid and Israeli Apartheid  in detail below, it should be noted that the most fundamental of the 30 Articles of the UDHR is Article 3: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person” [2].  Inequity and poverty contributed to avoidable death from deprivation in Apartheid South Africa, and in Apartheid Israel. Indeed avoidable death from deprivation continues in post-Apartheid South Africa, and among Indigenous Palestinians under continuing egregious Israeli Apartheid as described below.

(1). Apartheid South Africa

European settlement of South Africa was originally by the Dutch  Afrikaaners (Boers), this being associated with Indigenous depopulation through violence, disease, and deprivation. Genocidal Zulu warfare also contributed to depopulation. The British seized the colony as spoils of the Napoleonic Wars. The Afrikaaners thence moved north at the expense of Indigenous Africans but the discovery of diamonds and gold excited violent British expansion at the expense of the Boers and Indigenous Africans. In 1860 indentured labour from China and India (“5 year slaves”) enabled the British to evade anti-slavery laws in the British Empire. The Boer resistance to British invasion culminated in the 1899-1902 Boer War that was won by Britain and was popular in Britain but was disapproved of by Continental Europeans who disliked the British killing fellow White Europeans (7,000 Afrikaaner combatants were killed, and 28,000 mainly Afrikaaner women and children and 20,000 Africans died in British concentration camps).  The Indigenous South Africans, Chinese and Indians deriving from indentured workers, and mixed-race (“Coloured”) people were cruelly subordinate to the Europeans under British rule in South Africa as in the rest of the British Empire. On 11 September 1906 Gandhi launched his famous peaceful resistance Satyagraha (force truth) movement at a Johannesburg mass meeting  to protest race-based ID. In 1912 the African National Congress (ANC) was founded. Many extreme right-wing and White supremacist Afrikaaner Nationalists  were imprisoned during WW2 for pro-Nazi sympathies.

1948 saw the  Afrikaaner nationalist victory in Whites-only elections and increasing racist Apartheid legislation legitimizing dispossession, confinement and control of the African, Asian and part-European majority. Dr Hendrik Verwoerd (Minister for Native Affairs in 1950-1958, and PM in 1958-1966) became known as the “architect of Apartheid”.  In 1960 the  Sharpeville Massacre of unarmed Africans (69 killed, 180 wounded) led to international repugnance and to increasing World opposition, sanctions and boycotts, and in  1961 South Africa cut British Commonwealth ties. In the period of the 1960s-1980s there was crucial covert UK and US support for South Africa, and there  were South African military attacks in the “front-line” neighbouring countries of Angola, Mozambique and Rhodesia. With French and US assistance Apartheid Israel had acquired nuclear weapons by 1967 and thence helped Apartheid South Africa to acquire nuclear weapons. ANC leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years on remote Robben Island but was released in 1990  following the lifting of the government ban on the ANC and other political organizations. In 1990, Namibia (that had been decimated by the Germans in the 1900s genocide of the Indigenous Namas and Hereros) gained  independence from South Africa. The collapse of Apartheid in 1993 was followed by democracy and majority rule under Nelson Mandela in 1994, and surrender of nuclear weapons. Majority rule  was associated with a post-independence HIV/AIDS epidemic with about 12% of the population infected by 2003 [1].

After the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre campaigns for international isolation of Apartheid South Africa intensified despite variously covert and overt support for the South African regime from the White Anglosphere (the US, UK, Canada, and Australia)  and Apartheid Israel. Decent people across the world were fervent in their opposition to Apartheid to the extent that West Indian cricketers and musician Paul Simon were ostracized for violating anti-Apartheid Sanctions, albeit out of sympathy for the Africans. In racist White Australia successive racist conservative Coalition governments supported Apartheid South Africa and Whites-only sporting tours.  However this ended in 1972 with the election of the reformist Whitlam Labor Government that supported UN resolutions against apartheid, implemented oil, trade and arms embargo against Apartheid South Africa, banned the entry of racially -selected sports teams, passed the 1975 Anti-Racism Bill, and  initiated an apartheid sports boycott. After the US- and UK-backed Coup that removed the Whitlam Labor Government in 1975, Whitlam’s conservative Coalition successor as PM, Malcolm Fraser, departed from the long-standing racist conservative tradition in Australia and played a key role in Gleneagles Agreement imposing sanctions on sporting ties with South Africa [6]. However as outlined below, 30 years after the fall of Apartheid in South Africa  Zionist-subverted and US lackey Australia is second only to the US as a supporter of Apartheid Israel and hence of the evil crime of Apartheid. Indeed the present cowardly and unprincipled Australian Labor Government adopts the false, anti-semitic and holocaust-ignoring IHRA Definition  of anti-Semitism, denies the reality of Israeli Apartheid, opposes Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Apartheid Israel as “anti-semitic” , and indeed has shockingly betrayed Palestinian human rights and Humanity in 85 ways [7-10].

(2). Apartheid Israel

The forebears of the present Indigenous Palestinians have continuously inhabited the land known as “Palestine” (or variants thereof) for 3,000 years, and indeed to the very start of the Agrarian Revolution in the Fertile Crescent 10,000 years ago. In 1880 as part of the 400-year Ottoman Caliphate, Palestine had a population of 800,000 that was mostly Muslim with a 10% Christian community (there were then about 25,000 Jews in Palestine, about half of them immigrants). In 1914 the imperialist and genocidally racist British deliberately confected war with the Turks (by seizing  2 British-built Turkish battleships) and invaded the Ottoman Empire for oil and imperial  hegemony.  2 days after the victory over the Turks by the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba in Palestine (31 October 1917), the imperialist British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour issued the  Balfour Declaration to racist Zionist Lord Rothschild on 2 November 1917 granting Palestine as a Jewish Homeland in an attempt to get Jewish Bolsheviks to keep Russia in the war against Germany. A Palestinian Famine in WW1 killed about 0.1 million Palestinians.100 Palestinian men and boys were killed by Australian and New Zealand soldiers of the ANZAC Mounted Division on 10 December 1918 in the Surafend Massacre. Massive Jewish immigration to British-ruled Palestine caused massive dislocation of the rural Palestinian population of tenant farmers resulting in an Arab rebellion in the 1930s that was suppressed by the British and by British-armed and British-trained Zionist militias (10% of the adult male Indigenous Palestinian population was killed). In 1939 Jewish immigration was stopped to forestall Muslim disaffection in the British Empire during WW2. Jewish immigration resumed in 1945, and by 1948 there were 650,000 Jews and 1.4 million Indigenous Palestinian in Palestine [10].

In 1947 the UN put forward a Partition plan for Palestine, the genocidally racist Zionist settler-colonialists having rejected civilized proposals for a unitary secular democracy in Palestine [11]. In 1948 the British withdrew leaving British-armed and British-trained Zionist militias behind. The Jewish militias  seized 78% of Palestine and expelled about 800,000 Indigenous Palestinians or about 57% of the Indigenous population. This mass expulsion called the Nakba (Catastrophe) was accomplished with 70 massacres  involving 15,000 killings and the ethnic cleansing of 530 Palestinian villages. 120 mosques were eventually destroyed. In  1967 Apartheid Israel attacked all its neighbours, seizing 100% of Palestine plus parts of all its neighbours, and expelling a further 400,000 Arabs in the1967 Naksa (Setback). The WW1 onwards Palestinian Genocide has been associated with  2.2 million Indigenous Palestinians killed by violence, 0.1 million, and by imposed deprivation, 2.1 million. The killing continues – each year  Apartheid Israel violently kills about 500 Occupied Palestinians (active mass killing) and kills a further 4,000 Occupied Palestinians through imposed deprivation (passive mass murder). Since 2000 about 10,000 Palestinians have been killed violently and a further 110,000 have died from imposed deprivation. About 4,000 Zionists have been killed by Indigenous Palestinians since 1920 (about 1,000 since 2000), and only about 40 have been killed by Gaza rockets since 2000 [7-10]. An average Israeli population since 2000 of 7.519 million [1]  and an Israeli homicide rate of about 20 per million of population per year [12] means that Israelis have murdered about 3,500 fellow Israelis since 2000.

Today  the GDP per capita is a deadly $3,500 for Occupied Palestinians versus $55,500 for the Occupier Israelis. Each year  Apartheid Israel violently kills about 500 Occupied Palestinians (active mass killing) and kills a further 4,000 Occupied Palestinians through imposed deprivation (passive mass murder). The Exiled Palestinians violently excluded from Palestine number about 7 million. About 7 million Palestinian refugees within and outside Palestine represent about 10% of the world’s refugees. Of about 15.5 million mostly impoverished Indigenous Palestinians today, there are 7.0 million Exiled Palestinians (excluded from their own country by genocidally racist Zionist colonizers), and 7.5 million Indigenous Palestinian Subjects of Apartheid Israel  (representing about 50% of the population, whereas 7.0 million Jewish Israelis represent 47%). The 5.5 million Occupied Palestinians are 73% of 7.5 million Indigenous Palestinian Subjects of Apartheid Israel but are excluded from voting for the government ruling them i.e. they are subject to egregious Apartheid.  The 5.5 million mostly impoverished Occupied Palestinians are deprived of all human rights specified by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,  and are highly abusively confined to ever-dwindling West Bank ghettoes (3.3 million) and the blockaded and bombed Gaza Concentration Camp (2.2 million). The 2 million Israeli Palestinians can vote for the government ruling them, albeit as  Third Class citizens under 60 Nazi-style, race-based laws [9].

Whereas the world condemned and sanctioned  South African Apartheid for over 30 years, the West has resolutely ignored or denied Israeli Apartheid for 75 years, and condemned sanctions against Israeli Apartheid as “anti-Semitism” . The Orwellian, mendacious and racist West has overwhelmingly signed up to the Zionist and all-European International  Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) that contrary to its false propaganda is egregiously anti-Jewish anti-Semitic, anti-Arab anti-Semitic, and holocaust-ignoring. Nearly all EU and NATO countries belong to the set of  35 countries that are members of the anti-Semitic and holocaust-ignoring International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance  (IHRA). Of these 35 soiled, pro-Apartheid  countries: (1) all are European; (2) the 5 located outside Europe (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Apartheid Israel, and the US) were all created based on the genocide of the Indigenous People; (3) 9 members were part of the genocidal WW2 Nazi Germany Alliance; (4) 4 (the US, UK, France and Apartheid Israel) are nuclear terrorist states; (5) 28 belong to the 30-member nuclear-armed NATO that accepts  mass incineration of billions of men, women and children as an acceptable military strategy; (6) 14 were notably involved in the brutal conquest and genocide of Indigenous non-European people over 5 centuries; (7) only 2 (Austria and Ireland) have had the moral decency to sign and ratify the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW); and (8) all but 4 shockingly voted No to the annual UNGA Anti-Nazi Resolution in 2022 that condemns Nazism, neo-Nazism and related racist obscenities.

The IHRA Definition of “antisemitism” lists 11 false examples of assertions (e.g. criticism of Apartheid Israel, Nazi-style Israeli policies and hugely disproportionate Zionist influence) that it regards as anti-Jewish anti-Semitic. All 11 examples can be shown to be utterly false assertions designed to damage and defame anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish critics of genocidally racist Zionism and of Apartheid Israel and its ongoing Palestinian Genocide. Simply put, anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism. Not surprisingly, the racist and mendacious IHRA Definition has been condemned by scholars around the world and by over 40 anti-racist Jewish organizations [13].

Since 1948 the genocidally racist Zionists have imposed a remorseless and egregious Apartheid on the Indigenous Palestinians, and those denying this awful reality (the racist Zionists, Apartheid Israel, the US, UK, Canada, Australia, NATO and the EU) are simply lying. To reiterate the Awful Truth, of 15.5 million Indigenous Palestinians, 7 million Exiled Palestinians are excluded from their own country; 5.5 million Occupied Palestinians are highly abusively imprisoned without human rights and the right to vote  under violent  and deadly military  occupation in ever-dwindling West Bank ghettoes and in the bombed and blockaded Gaza Concentration Camp; and 2 million Israeli Palestinians are able to vote for the government ruling them albeit as Third Class citizens under Nazi-style, race-based laws.

This is egregious, Zionist-imposed  Apartheid that is far worse than the former South African Apartheid. Whereas in Apartheid South Africa the Whites wanted the Africans and other non-Europeans as cheap and powerless labour, in Apartheid Israel the neo-Nazi  and genocidally racist Zionists simply want the Land but not the Indigenous People. Numerous anti-racist and non-Jewish scholars, writers (including Nobel Prize-winning writers), human rights groups (including Israeli human rights groups), and indeed Jewish and non-Jewish heroes in the fight against South African Apartheid have condemned the evil of Israeli Apartheid. For an alphabetically-organized compendium of such informed and humane opinions see [14]. Thus, for example, Human Rights Watch , Amnesty International, and Israel human rights groups B’Tselem  and Yesh Din have condemned Israeli Apartheid. The South African Government and 4 South African Nobel Laureates, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Nadine Gordimer and J. M. Coetzee, have condemned the horrendous Israeli abuse of Indigenous Palestinians [14]. Numerous other eminent anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish writers and Nobel Laureates have condemned the race-based segregation,  abuse and ethnic cleansing of Indigenous Palestinians [14-18]. Even Dr Hendrik Verwoerd, the “architect of Apartheid”, opined: “Israel, like South Africa, is an apartheid state” [14].

Conversely, for an alphabetically-organized compendium of frankly genocidal assertions by Zionists from the psychopathic racist founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, to the present Apartheid Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu see [19]. Thus Theodor Herzl (1895): “We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it employment in our country”, and Benjamin Netanyahu (1989): “Israel should have exploited the repression of the demonstrations in China, when world attention focused on that country, to carry out mass expulsions among the Arabs of the territories”. Former Apartheid Israeli PM Golda Meir (1969): “There is no such thing as a Palestinian people… It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country. They didn’t exist”. Meir  has been obscenely echoed by present Apartheid Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich (2023): “The Palestinian people are an invention from the last century. There is no such thing as Palestinians because there’s no such thing as the Palestinian people” [19].

Zionism is genocidal racism and Nazism without gas chambers but with 100 nuclear weapons and one of the world’s biggest high-technology armies and arms industries. Unfortunately the Zionist-subverted West dominated by Zionist-subverted America is fervently committed to neo-Nazi Zionism (Zionazism) and to Apartheid Israel and its ongoing Palestinian Genocide. The mendacious West ignores the horrendous realities of Israeli Apartheid and ongoing Palestinian Genocide. The West  maintains a blatant fiction of a “2 state solution”  through “peace negotiations”, ignoring the harsh asymmetric realities of a rich, nuclear-armed Apartheid Israel versus defenceless and impoverished Occupied Palestinians, and that the ethnic cleansing of 90% of Palestine  has made a “2-state solution” impossible.

Zionist-subverted and US lackey Australia is second only to the US as a supporter of Apartheid Israel and hence of the evil  crime of Apartheid. Indeed the present cowardly, racist, mendacious and  unprincipled Australian Labor Government has betrayed Palestinians and Humanity in 85 ways [7]. The pro-Apartheid and hence neo-Nazi US Alliance members, including the US and Australia,  recently demonstrated their sheer moral degeneracy by voting No to the annual UN General Assembly Anti-Nazi Resolution (even nuclear terrorist and serial war criminal Apartheid Israel voted Yes for 6 million obvious reasons) [7]. Massive further  ethnic cleansing of Palestine is now looming. Thus . Tom Pickering (a former US Ambassador to Apartheid Israel and the UN) (2021): “The Palestinians who clearly suffered a 20 to 1 death rate and who clearly are vastly overwhelmed by the Israelis in terms of military power… I think it is an extremely high mountain to cross… It doesn’t appear there is a 1 state solution to this problem and there is no multiple state outcome to this problem… Israel for a very long period of time under Netanyahu has kind of narrowed down the goal for the Palestinians to something like 20% of what is currently believed to have been the Palestinian state under the 2 state solution [i.e. to 4.4% of Palestine]… And if in fact there is no agreement and the status quo is continued with interruptions for violence as we have seen, it is quite possible that over years – and I am talking about a long time – you will see a removal of Palestinians from the West Bank and quite possibly Gaza to other parts of the world and a no-state solution if I can put it that way. Israel triumphant covering it all” [19].

(3). 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), 75-years old neo-Nazi  Apartheid Israel, and post-Apartheid South Africa

The UDHR provides a detailed exposition of human rights set out in 30 Articles. However US Alliance-backed, neo-Nazi Apartheid Israel excludes the Occupied Palestinians from the human rights set out in all of these 30 Articles [20, 21]. The neo-Nazi US Alliance stands utterly condemned for supporting this gross, comprehensive and continuing human rights abuse. Apartheid Israel and  the Zionist-subverted US Alliance countries need global exposure of their crimes and rigorous  de-Nazification.

While the racist obscenity of South African Apartheid was abolished and replaced by one-vote-one-person democracy in 1994, huge  inequity persists in post-Apartheid South Africa and in the world in general. Thus presently for the world  the top 1% has about 50% of the wealth and the bottom 50% has only about 1% of the wealth. This inequity is disagreeable and embarrassing in the rich First World but is extremely deadly in the Developing World [1]. Thus in 2020 about 7.4 million people died avoidably from deprivation and overwhelmingly in the Developing World on Spaceship Earth with the First World in charge of the flight deck [1]. This is happening in gross  violation of Article  3  of the UDHR: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person” [2].

Gross and deadly inequity persists  in post-Apartheid South Africa. Thus in the first decade of the 21st century the average annual per capita income has increased enormously  for Whites and Asians but has almost flat-lined for Blacks (mixed race South Africans do a little better than the Blacks)[22]. In 2015 the demographic breakdown of South Africa was as follows:  Black African (41.0 million, 79.2%); Mixed race (4.6 million, 8.9%); White (4.6 million, 8.9%); Indian/Asian (1.3 million, 2.5%); and Other (0.3 million, 0.5%)  [23]. In the 21st century “avoidable deaths from deprivation”  in South Africa  (average population 52.1 million) totalled about 7.6 million,  overwhelmingly African and Mixed race South Africans [1]. By way of comparison, in the 21st century “avoidable deaths from deprivation”  in the rich UK  (average population 63.5 million) totalled about 335,000 [1]. Poverty kills.

Another way of seeing the deadly effect of poverty in South Africa is to look at under-5 infant mortality. In 2020 the “under-5 infant mortality as a percentage of total population” for South Africa (population 59.3 million) was  0.0655%, 45.2 times greater than that for Japan (0.00145%) but 2.4 times lower than that in 2003 (0.1600%) i.e. there was a 2.4 fold improvement. By way of comparison, for the UK in 2020 (population 67.9 million) the “under-5 infant mortality as a percentage of total population” (0.0046%) was only 3.2 times greater than for Japan (0.00145%), but 2 times lower than that in 2003 (0.0090%) (the UK values approximating those for White and Indian/Asian South Africans).

This violation of Article 3 of the UDHR in South Africa does not have to continue. Thus in 2020 for relatively impoverished and US-sanctioned but well run Cuba (population 11.3 million)  the “under-5 infant mortality as a percentage of total population” (0.0054%) was similar to that for the UK and only 3.7 times greater than that for Japan (0.00145%). Yet presently the  “GDP (nominal) per capita” is about $46,300 (UK), $35,400 (Japan), $10,400 (Cuba) and $6,500 (South Africa) [24]. One can roughly estimate that with better governance and a mere 60% increase in GDP per capita to a Cuban level, annual avoidable deaths from deprivation in South Africa could drop from the present huge 54,400 per annum to about 4,500 per annum. Remember  that the 69 African deaths in the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre sparked the ultimately successful global anti-Apartheid movement. Poverty, neoliberalism, greed and corruption are deadly in poor countries like South Africa. However because Black African and Mixed race South Africans enjoy all articles of the UDHR (except for Article 3 to a limited but deadly extent), one hopes that one-person-one-vote will solve the problem through election of empathic and competent governments.

In Palestine one envisages a secular,  democratic and multiracial post-Apartheid reality akin to that in post-Apartheid South Africa, and involving return of all refugees, zero tolerance for racism, equal rights for all, all human rights for all, one-person-one-vote, justice, goodwill, reconciliation, economic justice, airport-level security, nuclear weapons removal, internationally-guaranteed national security initially based on the present armed forces, and untrammelled access for all citizens to all of Palestine [11, 25]. It can and should happen tomorrow. However the fundamental requirement that should be implemented immediately is that all  the human rights set out in the 30 Articles of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) be immediately restored to Indigenous Palestinians. Exclusion of Palestinians from the all the human rights set out in the 1948 UDHR has meant 75 years of appalling abuse that I and other decent folk have been calling out for decades [1, 10, 26-28]  In the absence of such immediate restoration of all basic human rights to the Palestinians, decent humanity will continue to urge and expand  comprehensive Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against neo-Nazi Apartheid Israel and all people, politicians, parties, collectives, corporations and countries supporting this evil,  genocidally racist and neo-Nazi (Zionazi) ethnocracy.
