On 5 July 2024 the prestigious medical journal The Lancet reported that deaths from violence and imposed deprivation in the ongoing Jewish Israeli-imposed Gaza Massacre may total up to 186, 000 or even more. Famed Palestinian writer Susan Abulhawa has estimated a minimum figure of 195,000. However the Gaza Genocide-complicit, fervently pro-Apartheid Israel and hence pro-Apartheid Western Mainstream only reports 40,000 violent deaths and backs the ongoing slaughter.
These shocking estimates are of nearly 200,000 Palestinians deaths (so far) in this over 9 month Gaza Massacre of which about 45,000 are violent deaths and the remainder avoidable deaths from war- and and siege-imposed deprivation. The key data and arguments are set out below.
(A). Avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation, the Global Avoidable Mortality Holocaust, and the century-long Palestinian Genocide.
Numbers matter and for 3 decades I have been reporting science-informed estimates of “avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation” in Global North-violated Global South countries. The essential argument is that whether a child dies from imposed deprivation or from bashing, bullets or bombs the death is just as final and the inescapable moral culpability of the perpetrators just the same. Using 1950 onwards UN Population Division data I was able to determine “annual avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation” for every country in the world that totalled 16.0 million in 2003 [1] and 7.4 million in a pre-Covid estimate for 2020 [2]; the corresponding under-5 year old infant deaths totalled 10.6 million (2003) and 5.3 million (2020) [1, 2]. Thus under-5 infant deaths were about 70% of total avoidable deaths, and 99% of these avoidable deaths occurred in non-European countries i.e. poverty kills. About 1,500 million people have died avoidably from deprivation since 1950 (1,050 million of them under-5 year old infants) on Spaceship Earth with the rich and merciless Global North in charge of the flight deck in an ongoing Global Avoidable Mortality Holocaust [2].
I have used this rigorous approach to determine “avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation” in post-1950 wars. I variously reported my findings in hundreds of large, carefully researched and exhaustively referenced articles [3, 4] and in 9 huge books (including several massively updated revised editions) [1, 2, 5-10]. Violent deaths in these wars are difficult to ascertain but expert polling-based estimates indicated that of 5 million Iraqi deaths under US Alliance-imposed Sanctions and then Occupation (1990-2011) about 1.7 million were violent deaths and 3.3 million were avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation [11-13]. A similar estimate of 7 million Afghan deaths in the Afghan War (2001-2021) included 6 million avoidable deaths from deprivation [12, 14]. However the mendacious and racist West understates this carnage by a factor of 10-20 by ignoring avoidable deaths from war-imposed deprivation. Thus at best the Western Mainstream media claim 0.3 million Iraqi deaths (e.g. Iraq Body Count [15]; the Australian ABC reported only “tens of thousands” [16]) but this ignores 3.5 million avoidable deaths from deprivation. Further, in 2007 there were 5 million Iraqi orphans [17-19] and the average number of children in an Iraqi family is about 4.3 [20], so the death toll of Iraqi parents alone is 2 x 5.0 million/4.3 = 2.3 million. If we add the 2.5 million under-5 infant deaths (0.7 x 3.5 million avoidable deaths from deprivation = 2.5 million under-5 infant deaths) the total comes to 4.8 million. Deaths from violence and war-imposed deprivation in the US Alliance-imposed Iraqi Holocaust and Afghan Holocaust total about 5 million and 7 million, respectively [1-7, 9, 11-14].
The century-long Palestinian Genocide dates back to the British invasion of the Ottoman Empire in 1914 for oil and global hegemony. The British granting of the ancient land of Palestine to the Zionists occurred just 2 days after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) defeat of the Turks at Beersheba in Palestine on 31 October 1917. The Palestine Genocide has involved 2 million Palestinian deaths from British imperialist- and Zionist-imposed deprivation and 0.1 million violent Palestinian deaths before 7 October 2023 and about 0.2 million violent deaths in the current Gaza Genocide [9, 25].
(B). Gaza deaths from Jewish Israeli-imposed violence and deprivation are now estimated to total about 200,000.
I am an anti-racist Jewish Australian scientist and humanitarian and belong to a vibrant, dedicated and diverse Palestinian human rights group called Free Palestine Melbourne (FPM) (indeed I was a founding member and suggested the name of the organization). FPM has been involved in organizing huge Sunday Rallies for Gaza in the heart of Melbourne every week for the last 9 months of the Gaza Massacre and Gaza Genocide since the 7 October 2023 Jewish Israeli IDF response to the Palestinian Breakout from the Gaza Concentration Camp. After a recent medical and medical emergency interlude of several weeks I returned to attending the Sunday Rallies. On the 7 July Sunday Rally one of the Rally speakers was FPM activist Mai Hamed, who had declared on a top Australian ABC TV program “Q&A” (4 March 2024) that “As a Palestinian Australian we have watched our families slaughtered and our communities decimated, and our people dehumanised. Our government has been complicit in this genocide. There have been 21 weeks’ worth of protest and actions across the nation. Australians have come out time and again saying they do not want to be complicit in Israel’s genocide and to call for a permanent ceasefire and end to the occupation” [26]. At the 7 July Rally Mai Hamed declared that the massive devastation of Gaza meant that attempts of Health Ministry officials to accurately estimate deaths were severely constrained and that the reported deaths were consequently underestimated. This prompted me to immediately search the Internet to see the latest reports of Palestinian deaths in Gaza. Some of these recent key reports are summarized below to track the emergence of the perception that Palestinian deaths in Gaza might be many times greater than generally realized.
(1). The International Middle East Media Center (IMEMC) had reported Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor estimates of deaths including those buried under rubble as of Day 250 (13 June 2024): “Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said that, in the period between October 7, 2023, and June 12, 2024, the Israeli army killed 45,223 Palestinians (41,131 civilians), including 146 journalists, 15,620 children and 10,173 women and injured 86,240 (the numbers of slain Palestinians include those [circa 10,000] presumed dead under the rubble since October 7, 2023)” [27]. The dead included 500 health professionals [28].
(2). Ikrame Imane Kouachi (Anadolu Agency, Turkey) reported on the latest Health Ministry estimates of deaths but excluded deaths of those buried under the rubble (6 July 2024): “At least 38,098 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip since last October, the Health Ministry in the besieged enclave said on Saturday. A ministry statement added that 87,705 other people have also been injured in the onslaught. “Israeli attacks killed 29 people and injured 100 others in the last 24 hours,” the statement said. “Many people are still trapped under rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them” [29].
(3). Al Jazeera similarly reported the Health Ministry’s estimate of about 38,000 deaths, excluding those dead under the rubble (7 July 2024): “Meanwhile, the total death toll from the Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7 has reached 38,153, the territory’s health ministry said on Sunday. The war has uprooted 90 percent of Gaza’s population, left almost 500,000 people enduring “catastrophic” hunger and shuttered most hospitals, United Nations agencies say. The increasing casualties have overwhelmed Gaza’s largest remaining health facility, the Al-Aqsa Hospital, which is already filled with the wounded from the relentless Israeli strikes” [30].
(4). Merve Aydogan (Anadolu Agency, Turkey) reported about 0.2 million fewer than the original 2.3 million inhabitants were in Gaza (3 July 2024): “We are again at the crossroads where the UN and its partners has to reset their operations,” Andrea De Domenico, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the occupied Palestinian Territory… “At the moment, we estimated that nine of every 10 people in the Gaza Strip have been internally displaced at least once, if not up to 10 times, unfortunately, since October,” De Domenico reported… Citing the Palestinian Authority’s Bureau of Statistics, De Domenico said Gaza’s population is 2.3 million and he estimated that 110,000 have left Gaza, and 37,000 have been killed. Noting that behind the numbers are people with grievances, fears and hopes, he stated that his agency based its humanitarian aid distribution plan on 2.1 million people in Gaza, all of whom need aid” [31]. [ Andrea De Domenico is head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the occupied Palestinian Territory].
(5). TRT World (Turkey) reported a similar huge diminution of the Gaza population diminution (4 July 2024): “Andrea De Domenico, who heads the UN humanitarian office for the Palestinian territories, said on Wednesday that nine months into the Israel’s war on Gaza, the UN “for the sole purpose of humanitarian planning” lowered the pre-war population estimate of a little less than 2.3 million, based on two numbers it has. He said that 110,000 people have fled Gaza and crossed into Egypt since October, according to the border authority, and close to 38,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s war. Over 87,000 Palestinians are wounded, while another 10,000 are estimated to be buried under the debris of bombed homes” [32].
(6). Dr Marwan Asmar (Countercurrents) reported on a 0.2 million diminution of the Gaza population (4 July 2-24): “UN: Gaza population drop to 2.1M with 9 out of 10 displaced multiple times … At least nine out of 10 people in the Gaza Strip are now displaced and have no homes. They have been forced to move by Israeli warplanes multiple times since 7 October, 2023” [33].
(7). Dr Marwan Asmar thence reported the latest jump in reported killings of journalists who are crucial for reporting the slaughter in Gaza (6 July 2024): “Israel Kills 5 Gaza Journalists in 24 Hours …The Government Media Office in Gaza the latest killings mean the number of journalists assassinated by the Israeli occupation army jumps to 158 since 7 October, 2023” [34].
(8). Dr Rasha Khatib, Martin McKee, and Salim Yusuf in a paper in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet estimated 186,000 Gazan deaths from violence and imposed deprivation (5 July 2024): “By June 19, 2024, 37, 396 people had been killed in the Gaza Strip since the attack by Hamas and the Israeli invasion in October, 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs… Collecting data is becoming increasingly difficult for the Gaza Health Ministry due to the destruction of much of the infrastructure… Armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence. Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases. The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population’s inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organisations still active in the Gaza Strip. In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2,375, 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip. A report from Feb 7, 2024, at the time when the direct death toll was 28,000, estimated that without a ceasefire there would be between 58,260 deaths (without an epidemic or escalation) and 85,750 deaths (if both occurred) by Aug 6, 2024” [35].
(9). Susan Abulhawa (famed Palestinian writer, author of the global best-seller “Mornings in Jenin” and “Against the Loveless World”) reported estimates of 195,000 Gazans killed by violence and imposed deprivation (27 June 2024): “The reported number of martyrs on Wednesday this week was 37,718. It’s important to note that this number only includes martyrs who have been identified by name and civil ID number through the beleaguered health ministry in Gaza. Given the breakdown of reporting systems due to heavy destruction of infrastructure and personnel, this number, even with its limited parameters, is a gross underestimation. Based on more accurate figures of approximately 370 people killed daily, multiplied by 264 days of genocide, the actual number is closer to 97,680 martyred. (Per OCHA estimate of 15 martyrs per hour: Over the course of 264 days, which amounts to 6,336 hours, this number would roughly be 95,040). The adjusted estimate of martyrs is 260 percent more than the stagnant reported number. It is reasonable to adjust the number of injured (currently 86,377) by the same percentage, bringing that value to 224,580. (Per OCHA estimate of 35 injured per hour, this number comes to 221,760)…Based on these estimates, both conservative and data-driven, respectively, the actual figures are likely as follows: 377,280 buildings destroyed completely or partially; 95,040-97,680 martyred; 221,760 injured; 24,750 dead or dying from starvation; 42,000 missing (presumed dead, kidnapped by Israel’s occupying forces or possibly trafficked). The following ranges represent conservative estimate or lower range of data-driven population estimates: 17,050-94,049 with chronic illnesses dead from lack of medication; 14,408-255,985 dead from epidemics resulting from Israel’s assault. This means the actual number of dead is closer to 194,768-511,824 people, with 221,760 injured. And counting. This does not include the thousands who have been kidnapped and are being tortured in Israel’s gulags, at least three dozen of whom have been tortured to death or died from harsh conditions” [36].
(10). Mark Taliano (Center for Global Research) has summarized Susan Abulhawa’s findings (8 July 2024): “Novelist Susan Abulhawa explains that the declared Palestinian death toll (of about 37,000) itself is a deception first because of the manner in which the numbers are calculated, and second, because of the reduced capacity to count death tolls. First, the only deaths counted, says Abulhawa, are those from “direct fire”. Consequently, those who die from lack of access to medications that would normally treat chronic diseases, those who die from Zionist-imposed starvation and famine, those whom Zionists kidnap, the missing, those buried beneath the rubble,(1) those who die from rampant diseases caused by bombed and impaired infrastructure including water treatment plants, (2) none of these are counted, even as the Zionist siege of Gaza, the Zionist bombing of hospitals and infrastructure, the murder of health care workers, are root causes. Second, even the limited methodology of counting only those who interface with hospitals is impaired since Zionists have been bombing and destroying hospitals as policy. Not only are they murdering hospital personnel, but computer servers and other instruments of recording deaths are being destroyed. The real death toll so far from the Zionist extermination campaign, explains Abulhawa, would be 193,000 plus to 514,000 plus” [37].
(11). Jordan Shilton (WSWS) reported the findings of 186,000 Gazans killed as published in The Lancet (9 July 2024): “The Israeli regime has killed 186,000 people in its nine-month genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, far more than the total publicized in the corporate media, according to an analysis by the peer-reviewed medical journal theLancet” [38].
(12). Andre Damon (Countercurrents) reported on the Lancet paper (8 July 2024): “The Lancet, the prestigious peer-reviewed British medical journal, has warned that the true death toll in the Gaza genocide could be 186,000 or more. This staggering figure amounts to 8 percent of the population of Gaza. A similar percentage of the US population would be 26 million people. It stands as an indictment of the United States and its imperialist allies, who have funded, armed and politically defended Israel’s genocide in Gaza” [39].
(13). Al Jazeera reported the finding published in The Lancet (8 July 2024): “The accumulative effects of Israel’s war on Gaza could mean the true death toll could reach more than 186,000 people, according to a study published in the journal Lancet. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military offensive on October 7 in the wake of deadly Hamas attacks. The study pointed out that the death toll is higher because the official toll does not take into account thousands of dead buried under rubble and indirect deaths due to destruction of health facilities, food distribution systems and other public infrastructure. Conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence, the study said, and even if the Gaza war ends immediately, it will continue to cause many indirect deaths in the coming months and years through things like diseases. The study said the death toll is expected to be far larger given that much of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed; there are shortages of food, water and shelter; and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees has seen its funding cut. “In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths,” it said” [40].
Final comments and conclusions
In the only democratic elections held in Palestine (albeit under Occupier Israeli guns), in the 2006 Occupied Palestinian elections Hamas was overwhelmingly victorious. Accordingly Occupier Israelis killed by Hamas in or near Gaza can be estimated as 308 ( 1 January 2008 – 19 September 2023 ) + 1,200 (7 October 2023) = 1,508. In contrast Occupied Palestinians killed by Occupier Jewish Israelis in Gaza total 6,407 (1 January 2008 – 19 September 2023) + 186,000 (7 October 2023 – 5 July 2024) = 192,407 i.e. 192,407/1,508 = 128 times more than the Jewish Israelis killed, and nearly 13 times greater than the Occupied/Occupier Reprisals Death Ratio of 10 advocated by the mass murderer and Nazi leader Hitler [41-43]. Terrorism is as terrorism does, and terrorist is as terrorist does. Yet the US Alliance state terrorists declare Hamas to be a terrorist organization despite 128 times fewer Israeli deaths at the hands of Hamas than Palestinian deaths at the hands of Jewish Israelis.
As far as I am aware, the findings published in The Lancet have not been published by Western Mainstream media. Zionist-subverted Western Mainstream journalist, editor, politician, academic and commentariat presstitutes continue to lie by omission about the horrific deaths in the genocidal US War on Terror and the ongoing Palestinians Genocide [28]. This horrendous and ongoing carnage demands immediate action by the World. After 69 Africans were killed in the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre the World galvanized and emplaced Boycotts and Sanctions against Apartheid South Africa that eventually led to the downfall of Apartheid South Africa by 1994. 186,000 Palestinians killed in the ongoing Gaza Genocide demands that the World urgently applies rigorous and comprehensive Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against neo-Nazi Apartheid Israel and indeed against all unforgivable people, parties and politicians, collectives, companies and countries (notably the US, UK, neo-Nazi Germany and Australia) supporting this genocidally racist, egregiously mendacious, child-killing, women-killing and neo-Nazi Apartheid rogue state.
