Sardar Sarovar flood level increase threatens submergence of many villages- Appeal to the authorities not to repeat the deliberate neglect of human values as it happened in September last year
To
Shri Raj Kumar
Chief Secretary
Govt of Gujarat
Dear Shri Raj Kumar,
I take note of the alert issued of flood water level at Sardar Sarovar Dam reaching a potentially dangerous level at present, immediately threatening the lives of people in 25 villages
In principle, submergence of any land and other property of people, disrupting their lives, violates the basic human rights of those affected. To allow such submergence without prior compensation is far worse. I therefore appeal to the Gujarat government to be sensitive to the problems faced by the affected villagers and address their concerns immediately.
In particular, I wish to remind the State government of the human truma and disruption of lives that resulted from the decision deliberately taken by Sardar Sarovar authorities last year in September, that violated every norm of human dignity and every principle of natural justice that elicited public uproar and resentment across the country (https://scroll.in/article/1056412/ahead-of-modis-birthday-gujarat-dam-delayed-water-release-despite-heavy-rain-and-official-alerts–)
I would appeal to the State government not to repeat such a deliberate act of neglect as it was the case last year, during the current rainy season.
Regards,
Yours sincerely,
E A S Sarma
