Jamia Millia Islamia Admin, Revoke the Arbitrary Show-Cause Notices and Stop the Witch-Hunting of Dissenting Students

Jamia Millia Islamia

In another attempt to stifle the voices of dissenting students, the Jamia Millia Islamia administration slammed show-cause notices on student activists Comrade Saurabh from AISA, Comrade Niranjan from AIRSO, Comrade Jyoti and Comrade Fuzail for remembering the horror and violence unleashed by the Delhi Police on the campus on 15th Dec. 2019.

Over the last few months, the Jamia administration under the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif, a loyal follower and stooge of the Sangh, has strategically increased the crackdown on students who hold them accountable and demand their rights. On 29 Nov. 2024, the administration released a Memorandum reiterating the ban on protests, slogans, and dissent against constitutional dignitaries, equating dissent with disorder. The memorandum was condemned by the students openly and still, the administration slammed show-cause notices on the student activists organizing the peaceful protests on 15-16 Dec. 2024 by citing the same memorandum which proves that the administration has its allegiance to the Sangh BJP-RSS State which can not tolerate criticism and is afraid of dissenting voices, especially those of students.

In addition to issuing the memorandum, the Jamia administration stooped as low as to disrupt the ongoing examination preparation and process of students by issuing a sudden circular that stated that the Campus would be closed for ‘maintenance’ purposes on 15 Dec. 2024, the day when Jamia comes together to remember the horror and violence unleashed by the Delhi Police in 2019 on its students and demands the release of all anti-CAA political prisoners. The circular was just a ploy to ward off students from coming to the campus and participating in the protest as it did NOT state anywhere that students are prohibited from entering the campus. Yet, the protesting students of Jamia were forced to leave their own campus and were manhandled while Delhi police were stationed outside the campus main gate to intimidate them and unleash violence on them as soon as they get the order from the State.

Despite the heavy police presence and crackdown on students’ resistance, hundreds of Jamia students came together united on 16 Dec. 2024 in rage and remembrance of the 2019 Delhi Police violence. Students who had witnessed the violence on the day or whose friends had been injured in the violence spoke about the horrors of the day and remembered all political prisoners who were arrested under bogus UAPA charges and continue to be in jail. However, the Jamia administration turned off the electricity of the entire campus to dissuade students from gathering. However, the march still proceeded peacefully from Central Canteen to Zakir Hussain Library, that is, the site of the 2019 Delhi Police violence and concluded at Gate no. 7 while students raised slogans against the increasing crackdown on academic freedom and demanded the release of all political prisoners accused under UAPA for opposing the discriminatory CAA-NRC-NPR.

Under the tenure of the Mazhar Asif which began in October, multiple student activists have been threatened with suspension by the administration for their participation in political activities. The issuance of show-cause notices on student activists who have been persistent in protecting the freedom of the students on the campus and questioned the administration shows that the campus has come under the grip of the stooges of the Sangh who are not at all concerned about the welfare and safety of the students but instead, prefer to treat them as prisoners.

We demand that the Jamia Millia Islamia Administration must take back these arbitrary show-cause notices and must stop the witch-hunting of dissenting students. We urge the student community of Jamia to turn up in scores to reclaim their campus from the grips of the stooges of the Sangh and not let them take away our rights!
