Kashmir: Mysterious Attacks And Distant Peace

By Imran Khan

06 June, 2015
Countercurrents.org

With attacks on mobile towers in Kashmir resulting in death of two people and the subsequent threats to several others having links with cellular companies the mobile communication came to a halt few days before in Kashmir leading to many problems in communication, business, studies etc. The panic and anguish was quite clearly seen among general masses with such mysterious attacks. Though both government and militant groups denied allegiance to such attacks however both kept accusing each other for these attacks. Adding to the mystery a very less known group named Lashkar-e-Islam claimed responsibility for such attacks, without specifying the motives of it. However the mobile phone and internet connectivity was restored with the intervention of the government and the request of Hizbul Mujahedeen chief Syed Salah-u-din, and the superficial peace and normalcy again returned to valley but who knows for how long.

Apart from hitting the normal life quite severely one thing got quite clear with these attacks and that is: the normalcy and so called peace in Kashmir is so fragile and superficial that a single spark by anyone can get the valley again into the flames of conflict. And again the need of conflict resolution was felt in the backdrop of such attacks.

Who so ever behind these attacks and whatever be their motives however it is always the common people who have to suffer the most. Imagine how many people in Kashmir are associated with telecom sector earning their bread and butter from it. The conflict seems always between two king and their armies however the common masses always get caught in such conflicts. Whether militants or intelligence agencies the impact is mostly on the common man who just want to live a normal and peaceful life.

Nothing happens at random and such attacks too were preceded with certain developments, like the recent unfurling of Pakistani flags in Kashmir and with the advent of mobile internet in Kashmir, kashmiri youth have used social networking quite considerably against Indian occupation in Kashmir, the other developments included pressure on revocation of AFSPA in Kashmir as Tripura has revoked it, the recent war of words between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s accusation of India’s involvement in the terrorist attacks in their country, New Delhi’s contemplation of lodging a complaint against Pakistan in the Security Council about the activities of Hizbul Mujahedeen Chief Syed Salah-u-din and China–Pakistan Economic Corridor agreement and India objection and concerns over it.

Though many times in the past as well unidentified gunman have unleashed terror in Kashmir and Kashmiries have witnessed the appearance of new outfits on surface like that of Ikhwan in past and presently Lashkar-e- Islam etc however the identity of such unidentified gunmen and the sponsors of such outfits have not remained hidden for too long in the past and presently also common people do speculate about the roots of Lashkar-e-Islam and their motives. And in the course of due time the identity of Lashkar-e-Islam and their motives will surely get exposed. It just needs patience from outside.

Although such mysterious happenings are not new for Kashmiries but the question arises how we as a society will respond to it. If we respond to such shameless acts with fear, the terrorists (whoever their bosses are) may achieve their motives. But if we respond to such evil acts and terrorism with courage, we may surely defeat the enemies of peace in Kashmir, and on the other hand police and so called security forces need to show that they are not just part of the problem here.
