Hear a speech by nuclear expert Arnold Gundersen to Vancouver conference
"The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster One Year Later" March 11th, organized by
Physicians for Global Survival.
Arnold Gundersen in his presentation plus Q and A on current situation,
talks about the risk to people in Japan and North America, radioactive
trees and seafood, Tokyo's radioactive waste, government mis-steps, and
future challenges. He explains his prediction that up to a million
cancers will result from Fukushima.
Gundersen says due to the prevailing winds at the time of the accident,
20 percent of the radiation hit Japan, 78 percent went into the ocean,
and 2 percent hit North America, particularly Cascadia.
In Japan, even the cedar trees are coated with radioactive Cesium, which
will be disbursed again when they flower this Spring. Cedars in
California also show very small quantities of radiation, but this will
not amount to much in North America, Gundersen says.
Gundersen took five random samples of dirt from Tokyo back to the U.S.
for testing. All qualified as "radioactive waste" under America rules.
The citizens of Tokyo, Gundersen says, are walking around on radioactive
waste. The whole situation is made worse by the government's plan to
ship radioactive debris all over the country for incineration, which
just spreads the waste around.
Gundersen says that debris should be hauled to the super-radioactive
zone around Fukushima. The citizens should be told the truth: they are
never going home.
Plus I have a unique recording of citizen activism in Japan, as parents
measure radiation in their air, food, and children. Aya Marumori &
Wataru Iwata of CRMS from Fukushima say the government and Fukushima
University can not be trusted. They got equipment donated from France
and Belarus, to set up citizen monitoring stations.
This group had to bring in doctors from other parts of Japan, because
local doctors are totally controlled by Fukushima University and the
government - who often say there is no problem, no risk. They are
organizing an international conference, to bring in outside experts.
It's a big lesson for all of us: when disaster strikes (whether nuclear,
hurricanes, floods, etc) - big government hides the truth, and will not
help. We have to organize and act as local communities to survive.
