Students and Teachers Detained in Delhi

In a shocking demonstration of the continuing assault on Indian democracy and the utter contempt with which the state views education, learning and the teaching community – the Delhi Police was used today to prevent teachers and students from undertaking their proposed March from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar. On the day that the nation observes as Teachers’ Day, senior teachers and students were forcibly detained by the Police in order to prevent the March which was against NEP 2020 and it’s destructive impact on education.

Central University Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA) President Moushumi Basu and former Presidents Nandita Narain, D.K. Lobiyal and Rajib Ray were among the initial group who were picked up by the police even before most participants had even assembled. As of now they remain in pokice custody and it is not known where they are being taken.

The action of the Delhi Police today only serves to vindicate the sentiments behind the Teacher-Student Unity March on Teachers Day, which was about the unity of those engaged in the teaching learning process against the destruction of the nation’s future by destroying public education of high academic standards accessible to all.
