A Walk for Inclusivity and Awareness to Celebrate International Day of Sign Languages-2024

Hyderabad: On Sunday, September 22, 2024, Gachibowli Stadium came alive with energy and enthusiasm for Ashray Akruti’s Signathon 2024, themed “Walk for Inclusivity.” This event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of Indian Sign Language (ISL), bridging communication gaps, and promoting inclusivity and the rights of the hearing-impaired community. The day featured a diverse group of attendees, including students from Chriac, Gitanjali, and GRIET, corporate leaders, and representatives from organizations such as State Street, Qualcomm, Wipro, Bank of America, JPMC, and Synchrony, as well as supportive parents.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from the host, who acknowledged all distinguished guests, including Chief Guest Mr. Nitin Sharma from Qualcomm and Guests of Honour: Mr. Harish Kumar Sirapu from State Street, Sri JSR Prasad from Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, Ms. Archana Suresh from the Telangana Social Impact Group, Department of Industries, Government of Telangana, Mr. Mani Shyam Sundar from Dell, and Ms. Sunitha Tangella from Unisys. Also present were Mr. D. P. K. Babu, Founder and Director of Ashray Akruti, along with representatives from notable organizations and well-wishers. The atmosphere was elevated by an empowering performance of the National Anthem in Indian Sign Language by the Women Empowerment Program.

Following this, a brief introduction highlighted the significance of ISL, as well as International Sign Languages Day and the International Week for the Deaf. Key highlights included a 2 km Sign March, where participants walked in solidarity with the hearing-impaired community, the launch of a Sign Language booklet, and a SLE!P Brochure aimed at increasing awareness about Indian Sign Language. These moments reflected a strong commitment to education and advocacy. Guests presented mementos to corporate leaders and school representatives, acknowledging their support for the event and its cause.

The day also featured a vibrant Talent Showcase, with performances by students, complemented by a lively flash mob that embodied the spirit of inclusivity and creativity. All participants received medals and certificates recognizing their contributions and efforts.

Speeches delivered by distinguished guests collectively reinforced the importance of inclusivity and support for the hearing-impaired community. They encouraged continued efforts to break down communication barriers and foster a more accessible and inclusive society for all. The event concluded on a heartfelt note, expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, well-wishers, volunteers, and all participants from various schools. The contributions of the dignitaries were particularly acknowledged for their commitment to the cause. 

Signathon 2024 was a resounding success, bringing together a diverse community to promote understanding and inclusivity for individuals with hearing impairments. The event highlighted the significance of communication and community, leaving a lasting impact on all attendees.

Around 1200 from all walks of life have participated.
