For a better world, our lifestyle must be based on as less resources as possible

For a better world, our lifestyle must be based on as less resources as possible

Senior activist Medha Patkar launched a youth led, Towards A Better World campaign, in an online session where several youth leaders of Fridays For Future (a global movement led by Greta Thunberg) and other youth activists took part. We must change our life, lifestyle and sources of livelihood for a sustainable and just development, said Medha Patkar. “People should commit[Read More…]

After George Floyd’s Murder: Social and Ecological Justice Converge

After George Floyd’s Murder: Social and Ecological Justice Converge

The visceral reaction to the murder of George Floyd unleashed deep personal reflection about racism, social justice, and fairness, and launched a powerful, broad based social movement. The pursuit of justice, fairness, and the shape of our common futures encompasses but also transcends the questions of racism and raises questions about the nature of our civilization. In this way, the[Read More…]

The Ecology Movement Is Not A Social Movement — A Response To John Foran’s Article On The How-Question

The Ecology Movement Is Not A Social Movement — A Response To John Foran’s Article On The How-Question

John Foran has issued a wake-up call, a “call to arms”, and addressed it to colleagues and comrades:1 I feel spoken to. Not only because of its subject, but also because I am both a colleague and a comrade of Foran. I have namely been both studying and writing about social movements as well as actively participating since the 1950s[Read More…]

Trump: America’s Pilot-In-Chief In The Post-Ecological Age

Trump: America’s Pilot-In-Chief In The Post-Ecological Age

Many Americans are frightened by the idea of Donald Trump as the country’s new pilot-in-chief, fearing he’ll crash the airliner of state (including climate and environmental policies) into a mountain or the ground. Clinton, they argued, for all her flaws, knows how to fly this thing called a country using the federal government and at least won’t end up crashing[Read More…]

Global Biosphere Collapse, The End Of Being, Upon Us

Global Biosphere Collapse, The End Of Being, Upon Us

Miraculous nature is being murdered. Everywhere we look inequitable over-consumption is devastating the natural ecosystems that sustain a living Earth. Together we yield to ecological truth – personally embracing a global ecology ethic, and demanding others do so as well – or we all needlessly die at each others’ throats as the global ecological system collapses and being ends. The[Read More…]

Rainforest Etiquette In A World Gone Mad

Rainforest Etiquette In A World Gone Mad

Let us begin with theettam. Or if you prefer, with Leelamma’s kitchen, where thee (fire) burns. Between the wood-burning stove and the community pit-loo, an ecological picaresque unfolds.   Perhaps this is why, in Malayalam, theettam (excretum) and thee’tta (food) are near-homonyms.Newcomers to the language, whose ears (and tongues) cannot distinguish between  ‘tt and tt (slight upward flick of[Read More…]

What Is The World? Who Are We? What Are We Going To Do About It?

What Is The World? Who Are We? What Are We Going To Do About It?

We are better people, individually and collectively, when we reject hubris and embrace humility, and we stand a better chance of making real progress — defined by Rowe as “whatever is conducive to sustainable participation in Earth’s ecosystems” — when we better understand the world and our place in it

From Ecology To Education

From Ecology To Education

Politics in many ways has become a bully boy gimmick. One has to read beyond headlines and think of deeper processes and consequences. One such event was the recent cabinet reshuffle by the Modi led NDA government. What fascinates me in these events is the amount of strategies that are tactfully played out to portray a sense of sustainability within[Read More…]

Letter To Justin Trudeau On Canada Re-joining UNCCD

Letter To Justin Trudeau On Canada Re-joining UNCCD

We, the CBD Alliance, the global platform of civil society and academic organisations working on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), congratulate your government for the decision to re-join the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The three Rio conventions including the UNCCD are of great importance to developing countries and Indigenous Peoples. The Rio Declaration that is incorporated in the UNCCD gives States the responsibility to ensure that activities within their jurisdiction or control do not cause damage to the environment of other States or of areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. The same responsibility is contained in Article 3 and Article 14 (d) of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
