The Nuclear Energy Trap

The Nuclear Energy Trap

Nuclear reactors are directly in the line of fire of global warming. In fact, nuclear reactors cannot survive global warming. But that’s only the start of serious issues with the world’s newly found love affair with nuclear energy. This article examines the likelihood of nuclear energy as a fixit for global warming, or is it a victim? The world is[Read More…]

Nuclear Turns Fashionable

Nuclear Turns Fashionable

Small Modular Reactors (SMR) are the new nuclear craze, especially with the U.S. Congress, as America’s representatives see SMRs as a big answer to energy needs and reduction of greenhouse gases, advertised as a green deal for clean energy that skirts the heavy costs of paying the Middle East billions upon billions. However, the devil in the details is dangerously[Read More…]

Ten Years After Fukushima: The Experts Examine Lessons Learned and Forgotten

Written by Ali Ahmad, Aditi Verma, Francesca Giovannini A decade later, the footage of the dramatic hydrogen explosions in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, broadcast live on television—and the subsequent disruptions to livelihoods, ecosystems, and economic activities—still reverberate. In the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, several new nuclear safety institutions such as the World Association of[Read More…]

With All Chips Down, Modi Tries Selling A Swadeshi Nuclear Dream To India

With All Chips Down, Modi Tries Selling A Swadeshi Nuclear Dream To India

The recent announcement that India will build 10 new Nuclear reactors took observers by surprise. In technical terms, India will set up ten new pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) which are indigenous. Purely from a scientific point of view, this is utter nonsense because of India’s complete lack of experience with this type of reactor. But this article is not[Read More…]

The Mother Of All Promises And How Science Failed To Maintain It

The Mother Of All Promises And How Science Failed To Maintain It

In the 1950s, during the high times of the “atomic age”, someone had the unfortunate idea of claiming that nuclear technologies would give us, one day, “energy too cheap to meter.” We might call it “the mother of all promises” and, of course, it was not maintained. But, as propaganda often does, it stuck in people’s minds and it seems[Read More…]

Illegal Reactor Experiments At The Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant, India

Illegal Reactor Experiments At The Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant, India

What is being done at KKNPP-1 is known as ‘power up-rate experiment’ defined as “the operation beyond the power level licensed by the regulatory body” (IAEA). There are three types of power uprates: (i) “measurement uncertainty recapture” uprate, which involves an increase of less than 2% and is achieved by implementing enhanced techniques for calculating reactor power levels, (ii) “stretch” uprates where increases are between 2 and 7% and (iii) “extended” uprates with increases of up to 20%. Stretch and extended uprates involve changes to instrumentation settings and significant modifications to turbines, condensate pumps, motors, main generators and/or transformers. Since an uprated machine is made to work beyond the design limit, there is always a risk of an accident

Hiroshima Day – ” A Call For Sustaining  Life On Earth “

Hiroshima Day – ” A Call For Sustaining  Life On Earth “

Life on earth can be  sustained by closing down all nuclear power plants and dismantling  all nuclear war heads. The nuclear war heads present on earth are capable of destroying the planet earth 15 to 20 times. This madness of destroying the earth 15 to 20 times is really cynical. Once nuclear war heads destroy the earth, all life will[Read More…]
