Shaping The Future

I told Dr. [Bernice] King that we must keep making our voices heard. Not in hate – but in strength and determination. Because the fights over discrimination, over voting rights, over criminal justice, over economic and environmental justice – these fights are not relics of history. We are in these fights right now, every single day. As her father [M. L. King, Jr.] once said: “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” -MA Senator Elizabeth Warren

Yes, there is a time when we can not have silence. To have it is to capitulate to our worst tendencies of either expression in indifference or worse, our tendencies to go along with a process of ruination.

Accordingly I am dismayed and saddened that my town’s zoning board, when along with a deleterious plan to start building apartments buildings in my section of town (a section in which none of them live, presumably), destroy wetlands on which indigenous species live.

I do not know the thinking behind the zoning board people in my town, who are willing to zone two and a half acres for 48 apartments. I only know that they do not think like me.

Instead I see lack of water, especially during drought periods, for animals in my section of town when using the wetlands for their drinks, loss of an active integrated small community of families due to a high influx of others, more air and noise pollution from more people, more water supply deterioration for which our water company does its best, but can’t keep up with the fecal material and other sorts of contamination that enters our local water supply.

Don’t the zoning board members know that the compensatory chemicals are dangerous to health? If not, they can look up their health effects online — like bladder cancer, the type that killed my father in much pain and misery at his death through which he suffered for years before the final blow.

Yet I want them to go still further. I want them to look at biodiversity loss for MA. I want them to look at the one bard own — look him straight in the eye — on the property for which this housing development is slated and that will go under construction. (I hear him at night.) I want them to see him and tell him that his life is worthless since economic growth is more important –since someone making big bucks counts more.

“Infinite growth of material consumption in a finite world is an impossibility.” – E. F. Schumacher

Kenneth Boulding — ‘Anyone who believes in indefinite growth in anything physical, on a physically finite planet, is either mad or an economist.’

Now I want them to look further. Yes, I do because I have moral indignation about the world being pulled down around us.

So they need to understand that their lack in understandings harms everyone because we can’t have infinite growth on a finite planet. We can’t keep pressing on the limits.

I heard of another development of forty-two housing developments around three blocks from me. Yet the one that really is like a punch in the gut is this one because it means loss of species, maybe the only ones left on the planet:

For many years, my daughter and I would walk around three city blocks in length from our home to go to a heritage farm. A heritage farm is one with very old strains of plants or animals, ones often on the verge of extinction.

According to researchers, there will be no seafood left to catch by 2048, except for jellyfish, which will thrive in the new, collapsed ecosystem. Apparently some of the zoning board people in my town may not care about the future, but only the stupid rules and laws that they devise for infinite growth. They may be myopic — shortsighted in vision. Let them tell that to the one, sole one bard owl left in my neighborhood. Let them tell their thinking to seventh generation:

It is frequently associated with the modern, popular concept of environmental stewardship or ‘sustainability’ but it is much broader in context (see the quotation below relative to “in ALL of your deliberations …”. “In every deliberation, we must consider the impact on the seventh generation Seven generation sustainability – Wikipedia

If anyone wants to tell me something about stopping this horror that they, the zoning board members, are allowing, please let me know soon. Write a paragraph or two that is compelling and cogent. I’ll share it with my town’s zoning board. We have to stop the sort of destruction for my intact community that they plan to transpire if possible.

Dearest …,

I do not like the future for my region of my town. It is wrongful. It is wrongful in so many ways and I will not accept it unless the change is forced upon me and my bard owl is dead in the process. Then I will pray to future generations as I tried my best to prevent the mess that they have to subsume due to my generation’s folly and stupidity.

Folly and stupidity? We don’t know about what that is?

It is about destroying the natural world and taking far too many resources. How simple is that to comprehend?

You need a concrete example of the destructive process emailed from another friend of mine? Look:
Cape Town Is 90 Days Away From Running Out of Water

Then let’s leave my part of town alone. Leave it as is. No more hell.
