The still unanswered question in the latest twist of the war in Ukraine is whether or not the recent international scandal of a former Ukrainian Nazi Waffen SS soldier honored in Canada’s Parliament was a simple, unfortunate political faux pas by one, lone individual, or a cunning political ploy by yet other un-named political figures, that went awry?
PM Trudeau and his Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland continue to politically distance themselves from the recent honoring ceremony of 98 year-old Yaroslav Hulka, a former WWII Ukrainian Nazi Waffen SS soldier, that occurred in Canada’s House of Commons, with a smiling Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in attendance, alongside an equally-smiling Trudeau and Freeland in vigorous applause. One could see in the faces of Trudeau, Freeland and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy the absolute joy and admiration that was in common evidence throughout the House of Commons when the entire assembled body of Canada’s politicians joined with them in a thunderous, sustained, standing ovation for the Ukrainian Nazi war veteran. But the fallout, in the aftermath, was that, in the end, it led to House Speaker Anthony Rota being thrown under the bus and forced to resign from his honored lofty position. and everyone else scurrying for a political place of safety.
Political insiders suggest Rota’s decision to throw himself on the funeral pyre of the always ruthless, unforgiving realities of political life was, by choice, a quick suicidal attempt to avoid the scandal from spreading ever-further, and penetrating ever-deeper, into the office of the Prime Minister or his Deputy PM; thereby threatening their own political future.
In Freeland’s case, it may have had something to do with her past awkward attempts to cover up her own grandfather’s WWII past as a Nazi collaborator, and Canada’s own deep-set, on-going Nazi problem with its own hard-right, Nazi Ukrainian citizenry in the midst of a war in Ukraine that every day still threatens to turn into a potential WWIII.
But the question still remains unanswered, before the full story becomes resolved by simply being swept under the rug and totally forgotten, and before more heads will have to roll, what the still existing political realities are of the full story behind how a former Nazi Waffen SS soldier, who once was in the Nazi’s Waffen SS 1st Galician Combat Division, later renamed the Nazi’s “1st Ukrainian Division”, ended up becoming a Canadian citizen and so honored in Canada’s Parliament before the entire nation and, indeed, the world?
