Just before the 3 May 2025 elections in which it was re-elected, the climate criminal and dishonest Australian Labor Government gained votes by shelving plans for an Environment Protection Authority (EPA), and after the elections its first major decision was to approve a massively subsidized, deadly, and climate criminal expansion of gas exploitation in North West Australia that also threatens 1-2 million priceless examples of Aboriginal rock art (petroglyphs), some over 50,000 years old.
Before the Australian Labor Government was re-elected on 3 May 2025 the science-informed Australia Institute warned of the severe repercussions from the government approving the expansion o f the Woodside’s North West Shelf (NWS) project: “Australia Institute analysis reveals Woodside’s North West Shelf gas export project is driving up WA energy prices, threatening the state’s domestic gas reserves, paying even fewer royalties, corroding one of the world’s greatest artistic treasures, and wrecking the climate” [1].
Likewise, about 60 Australian scientists wrote to the Australian Labor Government before the 3 May 2025 election urging it to reject expansion of the North West Shelf gas industry: “Protecting our climate means rejecting new, extended, and expanded fossil fuel projects. Soon, you will be deciding whether to approve or reject the extension to the North West Shelf gas processing facility at Woodside’s Burrup Hub. The North West Shelf is Western Australia’s oldest and dirtiest gas processing plant, where Woodside proposes to continue producing gas until 2070. You will make this decision as we face dangerous and irreversible climate breakdown. From human-induced climate change to date, Western Australia already faces more deadly heatwaves; longer bushfire seasons; rainfall decline in the southwest; droughts impacting agricultural production; devastating marine heatwaves; and more intense floods, storms and cyclones. The iconic Ningaloo Reef and the Northern Jarrah Forest face near-term collapse. Science shows that the use of all fossil fuels, including gas, must decline imminently if warming is to be limited to 1.5°C. The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its Net Zero Emissions (NZE) roadmap calls for the end to new fossil fuel resource development as this would be inconsistent with meeting the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal… Localised industrial emissions have also caused serious, irreversible damage to the more than 1 million petroglyphs located on Murujuga. Some of these petroglyphs are over 50,000 years old and represent the most dense and diverse collections of rock art in the world. Protecting the environment, the economy, and ourselves means saying no to fossil fuels. For this reason, we call on Federal Minister Watt to reject the North West Shelf Project extension” [2].
The dishonest Australian Labor Government ignored these expert warnings and within weeks of being re-elected approved massive long-term expansion of Woodside’s North West Shelf project. If the Labor Government had taken this action before the 3 May 2025 election there may have been a quite different outcome with decent voters putting the even worse Liberal Party-National Party Coalition last and Labor second last in Australia’s world’s best compulsory and preferential voting system.
The predictable betrayal of Australian voters by obscenely pragmatic, US lackey, Zionist-subverted and unprincipled Labor will have to be punished at the elections in 3 years’ time with voters hopefully massively rejecting both of the major parties, climate criminal Labor and the even worse, effective climate change denialist Liberal Party-National Party Coalition that is presently in Opposition.
The 2025 election resulted in the Right-Far Right Liberal Party being massively defeated in the cities because of their effective climate change denialism through climate change inaction. However their red-neck junior party in the Liberal Party-National Party Coalition, the rural-based and fervently pro-coal, pro-gas, anti-renewable energy and Far Right National Party, retained its traditional greedy, ignorant, anti-environment , science-ignoring and red-neck support in rural areas. Centre-Right Labor won a massive victory due to (a) 85% of Greens second preferences and (b) many Liberal voters switching support to Labor. The Greens core policy was to “keep Dutton out” (Dutton being the inept and Far Right-pandering leader of the Coalition) and in that they were very successful with the Coalition being massively defeated. However while having 11 Senators and a record Senate vote, the Greens were victims of their anti-Coalition success and retained only 1 Lower House seat because of disaffected Liberal voters switching to Labor [3].
Cost of living issues aside, the 2 key election issues for decent and thoughtful Australians (Greens voters and like-minded people) were (a) the horrifying Gaza Genocide and (b) the existential climate crisis with Eastern Australia suffering massive, recurrent and record-breaking floods and Southern Australia suffering a record-breaking drought. In the end Mainstream Australia (a) ignored the Gaza Genocide and Australia’s complicity in that ongoing atrocity, and (b) judged Labor’s climate action policies and competence in government to be better than that of the inept and anti-science Coalition.
This conclusion could be seen as a bit unfair to ordinary Australian voters because without realizing it they are ill-served by mendacious, racist and Big Money-beholden Mainstream media that treat them like mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed manure). The core ethos of Humanity is Kindness and Truth but for a glimpse of what racist and mendacious Australian Mainstream media won’t report see [4-8]. Thus the Australian Labor Government and the even worse Coalition Opposition are complicit in the Gaza Genocide in 20 ways [9], lie for Apartheid Israel in 35 ways [10, 11], and despite protestations to the contrary Australia is a leading climate criminal country [12-15]. Thus for example, Australian Mainstream media report about 50,000 Gaza deaths whereas data published by expert epidemiologists in the leading medical journal The Lancet indicate that as of 25 April 2025 (Australia’s war dead memorial day) Gaza deaths from violence and imposed deprivation totalled 680,000, mostly children [4-8, 16]. The Australian Labor Government endlessly claims to have been “tackling climate change” but in its first term (2022-2025) it approved 26 new coal and gas projects [17].
Indeed the Australia Institute reported (2023): “According to the latest Australian Government Resources and Energy Major Projects (REMP) list, 116 new coal and gas projects are expected to begin production before 2030. If they all proceed, the 116 new projects would result in annual emissions of 1.4 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent (CO2-e) – the equivalent of operating 215 coal power stations” [18]. In stark contrast, Fatih Birol (executive director of the International Energy Agency, IAE, and a leading energy economist) (2021):“If governments are serious about the climate crisis, there can be no new investments in oil, gas and coal, from now – from this year” [19]. The Australian Labor Government continues to adopt a flagrantly Orwellian position that No means Yes.
One can only faintly hope that this early and massive Labor Government betrayal of Indigenous Australians, Australians and Humanity in general over the massive North West Shelf (NWS) gas expansion will mean that at the next elections (in 2028) the electorate will savage both Labor and the Coalition, consign them to history, and vote overwhelmingly for a joint government involving the pro-climate action Centre-Left Greens and the pro-climate action Centre-Right Teal Independents (called Teals from having a mixture of Green and ex-Liberal Blue climate action sensibilities).
Set out below is an analysis of how Labor’s pro-gas betrayal violates Australia and Humanity in 4 ways: (1) forgoing $215 billion for royalty-free gas will have a deadly impact on the huge burden of preventable deaths in Australia and the region; (2) the massive expansion of dirty gas exploitation for the next half century will cement Australia’s position as a leading climate criminal country; (3) there will be a massive increase in Australia’s terracidal Carbon Debt; and (4) extra pollution from the massive increase in gas processing on the Barrup Peninsular unforgivably jeopardizes the survival of the world’s biggest and oldest petroglyph (rock art) sites.
(1). Forgoing $215 billion for royalty-free gas will have a deadly impact on the huge burden of preventable deaths in Australia and the region.
The planned North West Shelf (NWS) annual production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is 18.6 Mt per year (2025). At a conversion factor of 48.7 PJ / Mt LNG this corresponds to 906.7 PJ (Peta Joules) of natural gas or 906.7 million GJ (Giga Joules) of natural gas. At a gas price of $8 per GJ this means an annual receipt of $7.4 billion from this natural gas. However it is estimated that from 2035 about 70% of the exploited gas will be royalty-free and so the annual worth of “free natural gas” will be $5.1 billion and the 46 year lifetime of free gas will amount to about $215 billion [20].
To keep us attached to physical reality (as opposed to the overwhelmingly dominant Carbon Price-free fiction of neoliberal economics), 1 calorie is 4.184 Joules, and 1 kilocalorie (1 kcal = 1,000 calories = 1 Calorie or 1 “large calorie” for dieticians) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius (Centigrade) [21]. The average adult male needs an energy input of about 2,500 kcal per day and the average woman needs about 2,000 kcal per day. You can readily understand this by considering a 100 kg man who needs to keep his body temperature at about 20 degrees Centigrade above the ambient temperature, this requiring an energy input of (1 kcal/ kg ) per degree C x 20 degree C x 100 kg = 2,000 kcal. From a biochemical perspective, the “energy currency” of cells is adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) with the hydrolysis of this to adenosine 5’-diphosphate (ATP) yielding free energy of 7.3 kcal per mole that is used in coupled energy-requiring reactions (e.g. mRNA, DNA and protein synthesis, repair and replication that keep cellular life going) [21-23].
Saunders and Campbell note (28 May 2025): “We conservatively assume that 70% of Karratha Gas Plant feedstock gas is royalty-free by the mid-2030s, and a price of $8/GJ for gas, which is now common in WA wholesale trades. On these assumptions, the NWS shelf extension will be receiving around $5.1 billion a year in royalty-free gas, or $14 million each day, or $215 billion over the project’s 46-year life… Across the 46-year extension of the project, a total $215 billion in free gas will be given away. For comparison, the output of the entire WA [Western Australia] economy was $448 billion in 2024” [20].
Now this is an immense scandal – “A$5.1 billion a year in royalty-free gas… or $215 billion over the project’s 46-year life” [20]. Some comparisons are useful:
(a). The annual Australian defence budget is $53 billion and this is projected to grow to an estimated $100 billion by 2033-34 [24];
(b). The cost of “Australia’s decision to buy three nuclear-powered submarines and build another eight” of these useless and dangerous White Elephants is $368 billion [25, 26];
(c). The huge and vital Snowy Hydro 2.0 hydrological energy storage project is now expected to cost $10 billion over 10 years [26];
(d), “The Australian Government’s annual health budget for 2024-25 is projected to be over $110 billion, with a total of $137.6 billion allocated for health, aged care, and sport” (AI);
(e ). “The Australian Government’s 2025-26 Budget includes $31.1 billion in recurrent funding for all schooling sectors” (AI);
(f). “The annual Federal NDIS [National Disability Insurance Scheme] budget for the 2024-25 financial year is estimated at $48.984 billion” (AI). For a detailed analysis of Australian Federal Government annual fiscal commitments see [26 ].
However there is deadly aspect to this profligacy. Each year an estimated 100,000 Australians die preventably from “life-style choice reasons” (e.g. smoking, obesity and drinking) and “political choice reasons” (e.g. air pollution, poverty, and under-funding schools, hospitals, and Indigenous circumstances), the breakdown being as follows (2020): (1). Obesity-related (24,000); (2). Smoking-related (20,000); (3). COVID-19 (12,000); (4). Medical error (12,000); (5). Carbon burning pollution (10,000); (6). Alcohol-related (5,900); (7). Avoidable Indigenous Australian deaths from deprivation (5,200); (8). Suicide (3,100); (9). Heat stress (2,000); (10). Drug-related (1,800); (11) Melanoma (1,400); (12). Road deaths (1,200); (13). Homicide including about 50 Femicide deaths from partner violence (193); (14). Islamist terrorism (0.2); (15). Chinese “aggression” (0); (16). Boat-borne refugees (0); (17). Hysterically Zionist-asserted “antisemitism” (0). The circa 2020 annual preventable deaths for Australia total 98,800 or about 100,000 [27] (for a 2014 analysis also ignored by Australian-killing Australia see [28]).
By way of comparison, annual preventable deaths from “life-style choice” and “political choice” reasons in the “5 Eyes” intelligence-sharing Anglosphere countries total 1,700,000 (the US), 262,000 (the UK), 147,000 (Canada), 100,000 (Australia) and 19,000 (New Zealand) [27].
It is important to consider the risk-related Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) cost of 100,000 preventable Australian deaths each year. However this is almost completely off the table in look-the-other-way Mainstream Australia. According to the Australian Government (2021):“Willingness to pay is the appropriate way to estimate the value of reductions in the risk of physical harm – known as the value of statistical life. Based on international and Australian research a credible estimate of the value of statistical life is $5.1million [US$3.3 million in 2025] …A key concept is the value of a statistical life (VSL) which is an estimate of the value society places on reducing the risk of dying. By convention the life is assumed to be the life of a young adult with at least 40 years of life ahead. It is a statistical life because it is not the life of any particular person. A related concept is the value of a statistical life year (VLY), which is an estimate of the value society places on a year of life. The value of a statistical life is most appropriately measured by estimating how much society is willing to pay to reduce the risk of death” [29].
The VSL-based cost of 100,000 preventable Australian deaths per year is ($5.1 million per person) x (100,000 persons per year) = $510,000 million per year = $510 billion per year. Compare this with the estimate of the Australia Institute: “We conservatively assume that … the NWS shelf extension will be receiving around $5.1 billion a year in royalty-free gas… Across the 46-year extension of the project, a total $215 billion in free gas will be given away. For comparison, the output of the entire WA [Western Australia] economy was $448 billion in 2024” [20].
If there were some humane decency in the Australian political Labor-Coalition Duopoly this horrific fiscal perversion would stop in order to save many Australian lives out of the 100,000 deaths annually from “life-style choice” and “political choice” reasons. The cowardly, greedy, mendacious and quintessentially traitorous Australian Labor and Coalition Duopoly should be held accountable for this horrific passive mass murder of Australians, utterly removed from any public esteem, and flushed down the sewer of history.
(2). Labor’s expansion of gas exploitation for the next half century will increase Australia’s Domestic plus Exported GHG emissions – but for “zero net emissions by 2050” GHG emissions should be going down not up.
It is envisaged that 18.6 Mt LNG will be generated each year and (18.6 Mt LNG/year) x 46 years = 855.6 Mt LNG over the 46 year lifetime of the expanded project [20].
Ignoring any CO2, natural gas is mostly methane (CH4). CH4 and CO2 have molecular weights of 16 and 44, respectively. Combustion of CH4 is as follows: CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2 H2O. Accordingly 16 Mt of CH4 on combustion yields 44 Mt of CO2 and combustion of 18.6 Mt LNG would yield (18.6 Mt LNG/ 16 Mt LNG) x 44 Mt CO2 = 51.15 Mt CO2.
Similarly, combustion of 855.6 Mt LNG would yield (855.6 Mt LNG/ 16 Mt LNG) x 44 Mt CO2 = 2,352.9 Mt CO2 Mt CO2 over the lifetime of the project
However CH4 leaks systemically and has a Global Warming Potential 105 time greater than that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame and with aerosol impacts considered [30]. It can be calculated that at a systemic leakage of 2.6% the Global Warming effect of the leaked CH4 is the same as that of the CO2 from the remaining 97.4% of the CH4 [31, 32 ].
Accordingly combustive use of 18.6 Mt LNG (taking into account 2.6% CH4 leakage) would generate 2 x 0.974 x 51.15 Mt CO2 = 99.6 Mt CO2-equivalent per year.
Similarly combustive use of 855.6 Mt LNG (taking into account 2.6% CH4 leakage) would generate 2 x 0.974 x 2,352.9 Mt CO2 = 4,583.4 Mt CO2-equivalent over the lifetime of the project.
As estimated in 2022, climate criminal and US lackey Australia is among world leaders in 16 areas of climate criminality, and opposes “loss and damage” reparations for GHG pollution for a very good reason – it is a world leader in exports of iron ore, coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Australia (population 26 million in 2022) has 0.33% of the World’s population of 8.0 billion, but Australia’s annual Domestic plus Exported GHG pollution of 3.44 Gt CO2-equivalent is 5.4% of the World’s total annual GHG pollution of about 63.8 Gt CO2-equivalent per year [33, 34].
If we add the increase of 99.6 Mt CO2-equivalent to the 3,440 Mt CO2-equivalent annually we get 3,540 Mt CO2 equivalent of annual Domestic plus Exported GHG pollution or 5.5% of the world’s total annual GHG pollution of about 63.8 Gt CO2-e per year. This is only a small annual increase but Australia has only 25 years to go before it reaches its promised “net zero emissions by 2050” – its GHG emissions should be going down not up.
(3). Labor’s gas expansion plan means that there will be an increase in Australia’s huge Carbon Debt.
Climate change economist Dr Chris Hope from 90-Nobel–Laureate University of Cambridge has estimated a damage-related Carbon Price of US$150-$250 per tonne CO2-e (CO2-equivalent) depending on location [34, 35]. Eminent climate scientist Professor James Hansen (100-Nobel-Laureate Columbia University) has estimated a damage-related Carbon Price of about US$200 per tonne CO2-e from the cost of reducing atmospheric CO2 [36]. Assuming a damage-related Carbon Price of US$200 per tonne CO2-e one can estimate a cost (Carbon Debt) of about US$250 trillion (for returning the atmospheric CO2 to a pre-Industrial Revolution level of 280 ppm CO2 from the present dangerous and destructive 425 ppm CO2), and of about US$200 trillion (based on historical GHG pollution of the atmosphere). The global Carbon Debt is about $200-$250 trillion and is increasing at about US$16 trillion each year. By way of a national example, climate criminal Australia has a Carbon Debt of US$5 trillion that is increasing at US$400 billion each year and at US$40,000 per head per year for under-30 year old Australians [37-43].
Dr Chris Hope and Professor James Hansen [34-36] are not alone in urging application of a damage-related Carbon Price. Thus science-trained Pope Francis in his 2015 encyclical “Laudato si’”: “Yet only when the economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resources are recognized with transparency and fully borne by those who incur them, not by other peoples or future generations,’ can those [economic] actions be considered ethical” [44-46]. The late Pope Francis demanded climate action “without delay” to prevent climate “catastrophe” [44-46]. Eminent economist Sir Nicholas Stern commented on the failure to consider global warming “economic externalities” (2007): “The problem of climate change involves a fundamental failure of markets: those who damage others by emitting greenhouse gases generally do not pay. Climate change is a result of the greatest market failure the world has seen. The evidence on the seriousness of the risks from inaction or delayed action is now overwhelming. We risk damages on a scale larger than the two world wars of the last century. The problem is global and the response must be a collaboration on a global scale” [44-46].
Indeed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has conservatively recommended applying an increasing Carbon Price up to US$75 per tonne CO2-e by 2030 as a key way of tackling the worsening Climate Crisis. The IMF stated that failure to do this would cost what would amount to 4 million lives by 2030 [47, 48]. However the World shows no appetite to close the nearly US$200 per tonne CO2-e gap between the actual damage related Carbon Price (US$200 per tonne CO2-e) and the global average applied Carbon Price (US$2 per tonne CO2-e). I explained this to some young relatives after lunch at a restaurant – the restaurant owner gives us a bill for $200 but we tell him that we will only pay $2. In vain one of Humanity’s greatest minds, Professor Stephen Hawking declared (2018): “We see great peril if governments and societies do not take action NOW [my emphasis] to render nuclear weapons obsolete and to prevent further climate change” [49].
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at COP27: “We are in the fight of our lives, and we are losing” [50]. The Trump-threatened US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been measuring atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) levels since 1960 (CO2, CH4, N2O) – they have been steadily rising over that period, are presently at record highs and increasing at record high rates [51]. Wherever I go I wear a badge stating “300 ppm CO2” as this is the simplest way of stating the problem i.e. we must reduce the atmospheric CO2 level to the pre-Industrial Revolution level of about 300 ppm CO2 for a safe planet for all peoples and all species. However by May 2025 the atmospheric CO2 level at Mauna Loa in Hawaii reached 430 ppm and is rising at a record rate [51].
And it is not just atmospheric GHGs that are increasing. Thus gas, oil, coal, cattle, cement and steel production are all increasing [52]. William Ripple and colleagues have been reporting changes over decades of important climate change-related matters. Of 35 climate change-related parameters measured since about 1980 about 28 are going in the wrong direction and mostly in a clear quasi-linear fashion (atmospheric CO2, CH4, and N2O, surface temperature, global energy imbalance, ocean heat content, ocean acidity, sea level, Arctic sea ice, Greenland ice, Antarctic ice, glacier mass, US area burned, global tree cover loss from fires, floods, hot days, human population, ruminant population, meat production, global GDP, global tree cover loss, oil, coal and gas use, heat deaths, CO2-equivalent emissions, per capita CO2-equivalent emissions, and fuel subsidies) while 6 operational parameters were in the right direction (solar wind uptake, fertility rate, Amazon deforestation, institutional divestment from fossil fuels, carbon pricing coverage and climate emergency declarations) and carbon pricing remained unchanged at about 10 times less than what it should be [53-55].
Eminent economist Sir Nicholas Stern has described the failure to consider the “climate change “externalities” in economic modelling as the “greatest market failure the world has seen”: “The problem of climate change involves a fundamental failure of markets: those who damage others by emitting greenhouse gases generally do not pay… Climate change is a result of the greatest market failure the world has seen. The evidence on the seriousness of the risks from inaction or delayed action is now overwhelming. We risk damages on a scale larger than the two world wars of the last century. The problem is global and the response must be a collaboration on a global scale” [56]. Unfortunately it is not happening – as pointed out by the IMF the world average applied Carbon Price is US$2 per tonne CO2 [47, 48] whereas the actual applied damage-related Carbon Price should be US$200 per tonne CO2 [35, 36].
.Ignoring the Carbon Price is not just simply theft but intergenerational theft and genocidal grand larceny [39-43]. Air pollution from burning carbon fuels is associated with 9 million deaths annually [57]. 7.4 million people die avoidably each year from deprivation, overwhelmingly in the Developing World and mostly under-5 year old infants [58]. Climate change will increase this avoidable carnage. Thus it is estimated that failure to requisitely address climate change will see 10 billion people dying this century in a worsening Climate Genocide en route to a sustainable human population in 2100 of only about 1 billion people [43, 59, 60]. Massive biodiversity loss continues [61]. Massive harm has already occurred due to continuing carbon pollution, population growth and economic growth and it is clear that zero growth in these areas is insufficient – there must be negative carbon pollution (atmospheric CO2 draw-down), negative population growth (population decline) and negative economic growth (degrowth) to halt and reverse this worsening disaster [62].
Professor James Hansen and colleagues issued the following dire warning (2023): “Decline of aerosol emissions since 2010 should increase the 1970–2010 global warming rate of 0.18°C per decade to a post-2010 rate of at least 0.27°C per decade. Thus, under the present geopolitical approach to GHG emissions, global warming will exceed 1.5°C in the 2020s and 2°C before 2050. (2023)” [63]. However the climate criminal Australian Labor Government, not content with Australia being a major polluter in terms of Domestic plus Exported GHG pollution, is keen to follow the recent example of some other major GHG polluters and hosting the next Climate Conference (COP31) in 2026 [64].
As of 2020 Australia’s Domestic plus Exported Carbon Debt was increasing at 3,438 Mt CO2-e x US$200 /t CO2-e = US$688 billion per year or about US$700 billion each year. By way of comparison, Australian’s gross national debt in 2024 was about A$909 billion (US$582 billion).
The current exchange rate is 1 A$ = US$0.64. Accordingly the Carbon Price in AUD of US$200 per tonne CO2 is $200/ 0.64 = A$313 per tonne CO2.
As outlined above, the annual production of 18.6 Mt LNG translates to 99.6 Mt CO2-equivalent from leakage and combustion. The damage-related cost of this GHG pollution = (99.6 Mt CO2-equivalent per year) x ($313 per tonne CO2) = $31, 175 million/ year = $31.5 billion per year.
The 46 year production of 855.6 Mt LNG translates to 4,583 CO2-equivalent from leakage and combustion. The damage-related cost of this GHG pollution = 4,583.4 Mt CO2-equivalent x ($313 per tonne CO2) = $1,434,604 million = $1,434.6 billion over the 46 year lifetime of the project.
However 70% of the exploited gas will be royalty-free and so the annual worth of “free natural gas” granted to Woodside will be $5.1 billion (as compared to the actual damage-related cost of $31.5 billion) and over the 46 year lifetime of the project, the total worth of “free natural gas” will amount to $215 billion (as compared to the actual damage-related cost of $1,434.6 billion).
(4). Pollution from increased gas processing on the Barrup Peninsular unforgivably jeopardizes the survival of the world’s biggest and oldest petroglyph (rock art) sites.
The Burrup Peninsula is the location of the oldest and biggest Aboriginal rock art sites in Australia. The rock engravings number over one million across the Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula. The Burrup Peninsula, previously known as Dampier Island, is a former island of the Dampier Archipelago that is now connected to the mainland and the industrial town of Kurratha via a causeway. The peninsula and islands are collectively known as Murujuga. The Burrup peninsular is located in the north-west Pilbara region of Western Australia and contains the town of Dampier as well as the Murujuga National Park. The Dampier Rock Art Precinct, which includes the Burrup Peninsular and the Dampier Archipelago, contains the world’s largest collection of 1-2 million 50,000 year old rock art (petroglyphs) [65-68].
The Murujuga rock art is on a base of 2.7 billion year old igneous rocks. The rock art was made by cutting away the outer millimetres of red-brown iron oxide and manganese oxide, exposing pale-coloured and centimetre-thick weathered clay. Along with direct damage to the rock art from industrial land clearance, Murujuga rock art has been damaged by industrial pollution. Acidic pollutant solutions dissolve manganese and iron oxides causing damage to the rock [66]. UNESCO in issuing a draft decision on World Heritage protection for the Burrup rack art stated: “Degrading acidic emissions [were] impacting upon the petroglyphs” [67].
Environmentalists protested industrial development because it caused the destruction and disturbance of petroglyphs and will cause ongoing damage via atmospheric pollution. Before the 3 May 2025 Federal election, The Australia Institute stated (25 February 2025): “AustraliaInstitute analysis reveals Woodside’s North West Shelf gas export project is driving up WA energy prices, threatening the state’s domestic gas reserves, paying even fewer royalties, corroding one of the world’s greatest artistic treasures, and wrecking the climate… Corroding one of the world’s greatest artistic treasures: NWS is, by far, the main source of acid gas emissions corroding the priceless Murujuga rock art. It is eight times as ancient as the pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge, and at least as important” [1]. The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) condemned the post-election Labor Government decision (28 May 2025): “The peak expert international body on cultural heritage matters [UNESCO] has clearly identified Woodside’s North West Shelf gas hub as the primary risk to the ancient rock art at Murujuga” [68].
In an Open Letter to the Labor Government before the 3 May 2025 elections, about 60 scientists protested the NWS gas expansion: “The extension of the North West Shelf Project risks the exploitation of gas fields in WA. The Browse gas basin lies directly under Scott Reef, one of our most ecologically significant marine environments and home to many threatened species. The North West Shelf Project extension also poses risks via sourcing feed-gas from fracking the Kimberley region, a vast area of natural beauty populated by unique and vulnerable flora and fauna. Localised industrial emissions have also caused serious, irreversible damage to the more than 1 million petroglyphs located on Murujuga.5 Some of these petroglyphs are over 50,000 years old and represent the most dense and diverse collections of rock art in the world. Protecting the environment, the economy, and ourselves means saying no to fossil fuels” [69].
In its last major act before the 2025 Federal election, the climate criminal Australian Labor Government bowed to pressure from the climate criminal mining and fossil fuel industries and from gas- and iron ore exports-dependent and climate criminal Western Australia and “shelved” crucial environmental protection legislation for an Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and a separate information-gathering organization that would have helped protect what is left of wild Australia from climate criminal and ecocidal miners and farmers [70, 71]. Labor believes in only one thing – getting elected. It correctly figured that getting pro-mining and anti-environment Western Australian, Queensland and New South Wales votes was more important politically than upsetting environmentalists.
In its first major act after being re-elected the climate criminal Australian Labor Government approved a massive expansion of the North West Shelf gas extraction industry for the next 46 yearsi..e for 20 years after the world’s deadline of “zero emissions by 2050” and threatening unforgivable damage to the World’s largest and most ancient collection of petroglyphs.
This blatant political perversion raises the question: would Labor have been re-elected if it had also made its decision to further violate the 1-2 million 50,000–year-old petroglyphs before the 3 May 2025 election? Morally degenerate Labor has proven yet again its endless capacity to put greed and power before the interests of Australians, Humanity and the Biosphere, and proving that you never get between Australian voters and a bucket of money.
Western Australia has an area of 2.6 million square kilometres (the size of Western Europe) and a 13,000 kilometer coastline but this massive gas exploitation is located next to a small coastal area containing 1-2 million items of Aboriginal rock art dating back 50,000 years. In addition to its ongoing Aboriginal Genocide and Aboriginal Ethnocide, White Australia has been wantonly destroying unique Australian ecosystems and unique Australian flora and fauna for 237 years. Indeed Australia is a world leader in animal extinction and land clearance. Australian and global greed is acutely threatening the coral of Australia’s and indeed the world’s iconic Great Barrier Reef that is suffering annually repeated bleaching events and severe damage from agricultural runoff (turbidity, fertilizer, increase in the population of inimical organisms), global warming and ocean acidification.
The destruction of culture and priceless art works is cultural vandalism that can be described as Cultural Genocide or Ethnocide. Indeed before the British invasion in 1788 there were 350-700 Indigenous Australian languages and dialects of which only 120 survive today with all but about 20 endangered by poverty, discouragement of bilingual education and remote Indigenous communities on traditional lands, and the continuing removal of Indigenous children from their mothers and communities. The Australian Aboriginal Ethnocide is one of the worst ethnocides in human history [72].
Variously as a lackey of the UK or the US, White Australia has invaded about 85 countries with about 30 of these violations being genocidal [72-77]. Thus, for example, Australia participated in the Korean War in which over a quarter of the North Korean population was killed and virtually all buildings were destroyed (Genocide and Urbicide). Disgustingly, the Americans used the horrific Korean War as the basis for an extremely popular comedy TV series, “MASH” [77]. Presently the US- and Australia-backed Zionist Israelis have demolished Gaza one of the oldest, largest and most important cities of the Arab World with a pre-war population of 2.4 million [77]. Thus while there is no ancient Egyptian record of the Zionist-inspiring Biblical Hebrew Exodus story, there certainly is of “Palestine” that is 4,000 years old. The “perfumes of Arabia” of Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth came to the Roman Empire via Gaza and Gaza played a key role in the 13th century transmission of extraordinary Arab-Indian culture to Western Europe [58, 77-82]. The world is witnessing a Gaza Urbicide.
It is estimated from several expert epidemiologists’ reports published in the leading medical journal The Lancet and The Guardian [83- 89] that as of 25 April 2025 (Australia’s war dead memorial day) about 136,000 Gazans have been killed violently and that 4 times that number (544,000) have died non-violently from imposed deprivation i.e. 680,000 Gazans have died from violence (direct deaths) and imposed deprivation (indirect deaths) or 28.3% of the pre-war Gaza population of 2.4 million. About 70% of avoidable deaths from deprivation in impoverished Global South countries are of under-5 year old infants [58] and we can estimate 0.7 x 544,000 = 381,000 such infant deaths in Gaza. Extrapolating from data on the breakdown of violent deaths, one can estimate that the 680,000 Gazans killed by violence and imposed deprivation include 544,000 killed by deprivation, 381,000 infants, a total of 479,000 children, 63,000 women and 138,000 men) [16, 90-101]. With exceptions of the UK Guardian [85], the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [89] and the Tasmanian Times [94] Mainstream Western media won’t report the horrific extent of the Gaza Genocide.
The Australian Labor Government and the even worse Coalition Opposition are complicit in the Gaza Genocide and Gaza Urbicide in 20 ways [9] and lie for Apartheid Israel in 35 ways [10, 11]. Small wonder that they support the NWS gas exploitation at the ethnocidal cost of 1-2 million pieces of priceless Aboriginal rock art that are up to about 50,000 years old.
Summary and conclusions.
Lord Kelvin (a father of thermodynamics and hence of carbon fuel-based industrialization) famously advised to use numbers for sensible discussion. The NWS gas expansion approved by the Australian Labor Government will have the following consequences:
(1). Forgoing $215 billion for royalty-free gas will deprive medical services and have a deadly impact on the 100,000 annual preventable deaths in Australia.
(2). Labor’s expansion of NWS gas exploitation for 46 years (20 years past the 2050 deadline for “zero net emissions”) means that Australia (with 0.3% of the World’s population) will increase its annual Domestic plus Exported greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 5.5% of the World’s total – but for “zero net emissions by 2050” GHG emissions should be going down not up, and the IEA has demanded no new fossil fuel extraction projects.
(3). Labor’s NWS gas expansion plan means that there will be an increase in Australia’s huge Carbon Debt of $7.8 trillion Australian (US$5 trillion). The annual worth of “free natural gas” granted to Woodside will be $5.1 billion (as compared to the actual damage-related cost or additional Carbon Debt of $31.5 billion) and over the 46 year lifetime of the project, the total worth of “free natural gas” will amount to $215 billion (as compared to the actual damage-related cost of $1,434.6 billion).
(4). Pollution from increased gas processing on the Barrup Peninsular will unforgivably jeopardize the survival of the world’s biggest and oldest petroglyph (rock art) sites containing 1-2 million items with some dating back 50,000 years (utterly appalling cultural vandalism and ethnocide by a racist and mendacious Australian Labor Government ).
What can decent people do? Faced with a worsening climate crisis decent humanity will apply sanctions to climate criminal corporations and governments. In Australia the Rightist Australian Labor Government is only exceeded in climate criminality by the greed-driven and anti-science Right-Far Right Liberal Party-National Party Coalition. In the 3 May 2025 elections the inept Liberals were savaged by an indignant electorate. Over the next 3 years climate criminal Labor must suffer the same fate. One hopes that the climate criminal Labor-Coalition Duopoly will be removed from power contention and replaced by a majority of parliamentary representatives serious about urgent climate action, notably the Centre-Left Greens and the Centre-Right Teals.
