By appealing to the religious sentiments of the electorate, the Union Home Minister has prima facie violated the Model Code of Conduct

Election Commission of India (ECI)Dear S/Shri Rajiv Kumar/ Pandey/ Goel,

I refer to the news report which indicates, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh will arrange a darshan of Ramlala in Ayodhya for the people of the state free of cost if it is voted to power in the state again“.

May I appeal to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to examine the veracity of the report and, if it is found to be true, act urgently against the person concerned, for a possible violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)?

This is not the first time that the person making such a statement has been reported for making similar statements, a fact which the ECI should verify from its own records.

May I also request the ECI to function more transparently than is the case now, disclose this letter and my earlier letters in the public domain, indicate the action taken including the minutes of its proceedings and the dissenting views, as the essence of any democratic process is accountability to the public?

Regards,

Yours sincerely,

E A S Sarma

Former Secretary to the Government of India
