There is increasing realization that recent times have not been utilized properly to confront and reduce the most serious problems of our deeply troubled world. While there is great urgency of responding adequately to what is now nothing less than a survival crisis, the world has instead been getting involved in more serious wars and worsening of the environmental crisis at various levels. The urgency of shifting to a path of peace, justice and environment protection was never greater than today for humanity.
As an important step in this direction there is a campaign for the declaration of the next decade as the decade for saving the earth. This should be done at the world level by the United Nations, but if this is not done, then this can also be taken up at smaller levels by the authorities as well as people’s organizations and then several activities can be organized around this theme during the coming decade 2024-34.

Decade in Save the Earth Now Campaign and its SED 24-34 Demand
All aims of this campaign are sought to be realized within a framework of justice, peace and democracy at three levels.
Wider Aim To protect and save the life-nurturing, life-sustaining conditions of planet Earth (within the framework of justice, democracy and peace).
Specific Aims
(i) Elimination of all nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction.
(ii) Restricting global warming to 1.50 C.
(iii) Other aims considered crucial for the wider aim, to be specified from time to time.
Immediate Aim
This concerns world-level declaration of 2024-34 as the ‘Decade for Saving Earth Now’, signifying highest priority for the objective of protecting and saving the life-nurturing conditions of planet earth. In brief this immediate aim is called SED 24-34.
Basic Statement
Keeping in view the increasing serious threats to the life sustaining conditions of earth and the need to find time-bound solutions on most urgent basis within the framework of justice, peace and democracy, the decade 2024-34 should be declared ‘Save the Earth’ Decade. This will help to focus attention on the foremost issue – that it is of the greatest urgency today to protect the life sustaining conditions of planet earth.
It needs to be established clearly that saving the basic life-nurturing, life-sustaining conditions of earth is the most urgent task and this should be accomplished within a framework of justice, peace and democracy. All the issues of world should be taken up with this as the central, basic aim.

This campaign, which started in 2019 with its immediate demand (then called SED 20-30), has received the endorsement of several eminent persons and organizations. These include Aruna Roy, Jean Dreze, Nikhil Dey, Medha Patkar, Jagmohan Singh, PV Rajagopal, Razia Ismail, Manoranjan Mohanty, Yogesh Jain and organizations like ASHA, ISS, MKSS, CBGA and Shahid Bhagat Singh Research Committee, and several others.
