Australian Labor Government Lying On 50th Anniversary Of 9/11 US- & Australia-Backed 1973 Chilean Coup

chile coup

On 11 September 1973 the democratically-elected Chilean Government was removed in a deadly US-backed Coup by the fascist Chilean military. The Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) was involved as a US proxy after the Chilean Government kicked out the US CIA. The  present racist, mendacious and US lackey Australian Labor Government is an accessory after the fact of the crime by still refusing to release un-redacted documents about the Chilean Coup.

The consequences of this US- and Australia-backed Coup were horrendous: up to 200,000 Chileans arrested, 30,000 tortured, 3,000 killed, about 1,000 disappeared, and  Chileans having to endure 17 years (1973-1990) under fascist dictator, gross human rights abuser and  mass murderer Augusto Pinochet [1-5].

(A). Australian involvement in the US-backed 1973 Chilean Coup, the other 9/11.

According to Wikipedia: “An Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) station was established in Chile at the Australian embassy in July 1971 at the request of the CIA and authorised by then Liberal Party Foreign Minister William McMahon. Newly elected Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was informed of the operation in February 1973 and signed a document ordering the closure of the operation several weeks later. It appears, however, the last ASIS agent did not leave Chile until October 1973, one month after the coup d’état had brought down the Allende Government. There were also two officers of Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Australia’s internal security service, who were based in Santiago working as migration officers during this period. The failure of timely closure of Australia’s covert operations was one of the reasons for the sacking of the Director of ASIS on 21 October 1975. This took effect on 7 November, just four days before Prime Minister’s Whitlam’s own dismissal in the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis with allegations of CIA political interference. In June 2021, [Professor] Clinton Fernandes, a former intelligence analyst, announced that he was trying to confirm the rumours of Australia’s involvement in the coup by fighting for the declassification of key documents. On 10 September 2021, the day before the 48th anniversary of the coup, declassified documents confirmed that McMahon did indeed approve the CIA’s request to conduct covert operations in Chile. According to the files, ASIS set up a surveillance unit in Santiago as part of the wider CIA campaign to discredit the Allende government” [2].The UK Government was also complicit in the US-backed coup [2].

Paul Daley of The Guardian has summarized Australia’s involvement in the 1973 Chilean Coup (2021): “Australia’s covert overseas spy agency, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service [ASIS], opened a base in Santiago to assist in the US Central Intelligence Agency’s destabilisation of the Chilean government ahead of the bloody military coup against Salvador Allende’s socialist government 48 years ago today. Declassified Australian government documents prove that in December 1970 Liberal foreign minister and later prime minister, Billy McMahon, approved an Asis request to open the base. For 18 months from 1971, according to the US-based National Security Archive, Asis apparently conducted covert operations in Chile – including handling CIA-recruited Chilean assets in Santiago and filing intelligence reports to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The documents disclose how McMahon’s successor, Labor’s Gough Whitlam elected in December 1972, less than a year later ordered the then Asis director, William Robertson, to disband the service’s Chilean operations” [4].

Professor Clinton Fernandes (professor of international and political studies at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, and who has managed to get some heavily-redacted relevant documents out of the Australian Government) (2021): “The Australian government talks a lot about fighting covert foreign interference but helps overthrow a democratic government in Chile. Then it slaps national security classifications on its records to prevent the public knowing what it’s up to. But national security should be a goal not an alibi. It should mean the safety of the Australian public. It shouldn’t mean protecting policymakers from democratic accountability” [4].

Gough Whitlam (reformist Australian Labor Prime Minister in 1972-1975 before being removed in a US- and UK-backed Coup on 11 November 1975 [5, 6])  addressing Federal Parliament  as Leader of the Opposition (1977): “It has been written – I cannot deny it – that when my government took office Australian intelligence personnel were still working as proxies and nominees of the CIA in destabilising the government of Chile” [4].

(B). Australians have been involved in  8 US-backed Coups.

The US is a horrendous serial invader of other countries. Apart from inevitable border spats, most countries in the world have not invaded other countries. Costa Rica does not even have an army. In stark contrast, the US has invaded 72 countries (52 since WW2), has committed 469 invasions from 1798 onwards, including 251 invasions since 1991 (according to the US Congressional  Research Service), has 800 military bases in over 70 countries, and subverts all countries [7-19]. Careful accounting reveals 85 instances of the US attempting to overthrow foreign governments since WW2 and that the US was successful in 50 instances, with US lackey Australians being involved in 8 of these regime changes [7-19]. A detailed and documented summary of this gross and criminal US violation of Humanity has been sent as an Open Letter to all Australian MPs and thence to a huge number of MPs and media globally. The Silence has been Deafening in the global US Empire [7, 8].

Famed truth-telling US analyst William Blum has listed instances of the US attempting  to overthrow foreign governments since WW2: “Instances of the United States overthrowing, or attempting to overthrow, a foreign government since the Second World War (* indicates successful ouster of a government)  China 1949 to early 1960s; Albania 1949-53; East Germany 1950s; Iran 1953 *; Guatemala 1954 *; Costa Rica mid-1950s; Syria 1956-7; Egypt 1957; Indonesia 1957-8; British Guiana 1953-64 *; Iraq 1963 *; North Vietnam 1945-73; Cambodia 1955-70 *; Laos 1958 *, 1959 *, 1960 *; Ecuador 1960-63 *; Congo 1960 *; France 1965; Brazil 1962-64 *; Dominican Republic 1963 *; Cuba 1959 to present; Bolivia 1964 *; Indonesia 1965 *;  Ghana 1966 *; Chile 1964-73 *; Greece 1967 *; Costa Rica 1970-71; Bolivia 1971 *; Australia 1973-75 *; Angola 1975, 1980s; Zaire 1975; Portugal 1974-76 *; Jamaica 1976-80 *; Seychelles 1979-81; Chad 1981-82 *; Grenada 1983 *; South Yemen 1982-84; Suriname 1982-84; Fiji 1987 *; Libya 1980s; Nicaragua 1981-90 *; Panama 1989 *; Bulgaria 1990 *; Albania 1991 *; Iraq 1991; Afghanistan 1980s *; Somalia 1993; Yugoslavia 1999-2000 *; Ecuador 2000 *; Afghanistan 2001 *; Venezuela 2002 *; Iraq 2003 *; Haiti 2004 *; Somalia 2007 to present; Honduras 2009 *; Libya 2011 *; Syria 2012; Ukraine 2014 *” [14].

A 2023 update: North Korea, 1950 onwards, Eritrea 1960s onwards; Ethiopia 1970s onwards; Sudan 1970s onwards; Congo (Zaire) 1960s onwards *; Timor L’Este 1975 *;  Argentina 1976 *; Uganda 1977; Iran 1979 onwards; Congo (Zaire) 1996-1997 *; Uganda 1977; Rwanda, 1990s onwards; Fiji 2000 *; Venezuela 2000 onwards; Kyrgyzstan 2005 *; Occupied Palestinian Territories 2006 *; Syria 2005-2009; Australia 2010 *; South Sudan 2011 onwards; Yemen 2012 onwards, Syria 2012 onwards; Egypt 2013 *; Turkey 2016; Bolivia 2019 *; Pakistan 2022 * ; Peru 2022 * [5].

As a UK or US ally, Australia has violated all circa 80 Indo-Pacific countries in the last 80 years variously through military presence (most countries), covert regime change (8 countries), and hugely disproportionately high Australian contribution to climate change (all countries) [11, 12]. Australians have been involved in successful, US-complicit covert regime change in Laos (1960), Indonesia (1965), Cambodia (1970),  Chile (1973), Australia (1975), Fiji (1987), Fiji (2000), and Australia (2010) with Apartheid Israel being also involved in the last 3 coups. Yet apart from border spats, a remarkably stay-at-home,  peaceful and pro-peace China – presently the subject of false, primitive, racist, and hysterical US Alliance Sinophobia, threat  and warmongering – has conquered only 2 entities in the last millennium, contiguous Tibet (in the 13th century at the same time as the English were conquering Celtic Britain) and neighbouring  Xinjiang (in the 18th century as the English were conquering much of the world) [5].

Before the 1973 Chilean Coup a key Australian figure involved in the 1970 Cambodian Coup was transferred to Chile. US spying in Chile was looked after by US ally and US lackey Australia after the Chilean Government had expelled the subversive American CIA. Australian Intelligence via the Australian Security and Intelligence Service (ASIS) was involved in the 1973 military coup in which the democratically-elected Allende Government was removed. President Salvador Allende died in the attack on the Presidential palace, 30,000 people were abusively imprisoned, 3,000 Chileans were killed, a further 1,000 disappeared and Chileans had to endure 17 years of brutal military dictatorship. Australian Labor PM Gough Whitlam objected to the ASIS operations before he in turn was removed in a CIA-backed coup on 11 November 1975 [2-6].

As described by John Perkins in “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”  the US subverts, perverts, backs coups and even assassinates to get governments amenable to its interests, and when that fails it invades and occupies [20]. However war and occupation can be horrendously deadly. Thus deaths from violence and imposed deprivation totalled 40 million in post-1950 US Asian wars [5] and over 30 million in the post-9/11 US War on Terror after the US Government’s 9/11 false flag atrocity that killed about 3,000 Americans [21-24]. However the huge avoidable deaths from US Alliance-imposed deprivation of Occupied Iraqis (4 million) and Occupied Afghans (6 million) is evidence of gross US Alliance violation of Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War) that state unequivocally that an Occupier must provide its conquered Subjects with life-preserving food and medical requisites “to the fullest extent of the means available to it”. Australian  soldiers are alleged to have been involved in 39 unlawful  killings in Afghanistan whereas the politicians who sent them there are complicit in the passive mass murder of 6 million Afghans, a 6 million/39 = 154,000 times worse crime [25].

All war crimes should be properly investigated and all those responsible must  held to account, including politicians for grossly violating the Fourth Geneva Convention in passive mass murder  of millions of Iraqis and Afghans. Indeed these politicians should be arraigned for horrendous passive mass murder before any Australian or US Alliance soldiers are indicted for unlawful killings of individual Iraqis and Afghans. However while the politician war criminals remain free, Australian and world hero Julian Assange has been abusively imprisoned for a decade in London for truth telling about US Coalition war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan [25].

(C). Evading Australia’s entrenched culture of lying.

Australian Governments are highly secretive and excuse this on the basis of asserted “national security” and “national interest”. In relation to such continuing secrecy and censorship over Australian ASIS involvement in the Chilean Coup Professor Clinton Fernandes commented (2023): “It shows that the Australian government fears the people who elect it…Australians would never tolerate such contemptible acts if they knew what these agencies were up to. The secrecy protects policymakers from democratic scrutiny and accountability, but this is not national security in any meaningful sense” [26].

The core human ethos is Kindness and Truth but in relation to the 1973 Chilean Coup this has been  grossly violated by the secrecy of successive US lackey Coalition or Labor Australian Federal Governments since the reformist Whitlam Labor Government was removed in a US- and UK-backed Coup, in part for objecting  to Australian involvement in the US- and UK-backed Chilean Coup [2, 6].

This obsessive secrecy of  Australian Governments is lying  by omission  that is far, far worse than repugnant lying by commission because the latter at least permits public refutation and public discussion (subject to censorship by One Percenter Establishment gate-keepers and self-censorship by cowardly Mainstream journalist, editor, politician, academic and commentariat presstitutes) [27-29]. Australia has an entrenched culture of  racist ignoring and lying.

By way of  example,  Zionist-subverted  and US lackey Australia on a bipartisan basis is second only  to America as a fervent supporter of genocidally racist, serial war criminal, human rights-abusing,  international law-violating and nuclear terrorist Apartheid Israel. Mainstream Australia lies by commission by falsely declaring that Israel is a “Jewish state” (whereas over 50% of its Subjects are Indigenous Palestinians) and that Israel is a democracy (whereas the Occupied Palestinians, 73% of its majority Indigenous Palestinian Subjects, cannot vote for the government ruling them (Apartheid). Mainstream Australia lies by omission by ignoring the repugnant anti-Jewish anti-Semitism, anti-Arab anti-Semitism and holocaust-ignoring of the all-European  International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) of which Australia is a member [30], US delivery of raw intelligence on Australians to Apartheid Israel [31], and the inescapable reality that those who support Apartheid Israel and hence the utterly vile crime of Apartheid are utterly unfit for public life in a one-person-one-vote democracy like Australia.

Mainstream Australian lying by omission and commission is bad for Australia’s international reputation and potentially bad for business – how can you trust people with an entrenched national culture of lying? The only saving grace for Australia in this is that the governments of most  other countries are doing likewise – as famed anti-racist Jewish American journalist  I.F. Stone succinctly stated: “Governments lie” [27, 28].

However it is possible to penetrate the Mainstream Wall of Silence via informative websites and progressive, truth-telling Alternative media like Countercurrents. Thus Australia has made variously war criminal or climate criminal impositions on all circa 80 countries of the Indo-Pacific region over the last 80 years, variously through war, occupation, subversion, participation in 8 covert coups (including the 1973 Chilean Coup) and world-leading climate criminality [11, 12].

A further avenue for truth-telling in Australia  is the recently-established National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). I have so far made 4 lengthy, detailed and highly documented Submissions to the NACC in relation to the Australian Labor Government’s lying for Apartheid Israel [32], huge but ignored Australian war crimes (including  involvement in 8 covert US-backed Coups) [25], corporations and governments ignoring  huge Carbon Debt [33], and exposure of huge and fraudulent university fees [34].

In general individual, corporate and government lying and deception is criminal fraud if it results in financial benefit. However if the lying and deception is in the interests of foreign government it is treason, an awful crime which typically attracts draconian punishment. The egregious lying by omission by successive US lackey Australian governments (including the present Australian Labor Government) over Australian involvement in the 1973 Chilean Coup and numerous other US crimes is itself criminal. Decent, law-abiding Australians will punish these conservative Coalition and unprincipled Labor criminals at the ballot box in Australia’s world’s best compulsory and preferential voting system – they will vote 1 for the humane and truth-telling Greens and Socialists, put the Coalition last and put Labor second last (the Coalition is even worse than Labor).
